Were Gleeds’ based where Banbury Plant/Nigel Matthews are now? Anybody remember Roy Pages’ yard at Hook Norton? I Went there with Dad a few times in the mid '90s, I think it was Swerford side, you could see the old viaducts in winter from there.

No, Gleeds was on the station Road out of Hooky just passed the old Railway Hotel (now a house),
Gleeds is now K M S Printers.

Muckaway found this out for you !

Is Roy Page still around? I know the yard got sold for building, his son was a fireman at Hooky.
I know where you mean regarding Gleeds; just past where the old skew bridge was taken down. There’s a farm on left not far past there where the Ironore works used to stand, until around 1950 I think as I’ve read the works shut around '46.
Lightswitch, you wouldn’t happen to know why the owners of the old Hooky station site never let photographers on-site do you? I’ve read in books that the owners won’t grant even authors etc permission to see the site. The only reason I can think of is there was a story in railway circles that when the station was demolished late 60s, they couldn’t retrieve the station safe as the floor was rotten and there was a deep void beneath-rumour has it whatever was in the station was bulldozed into the recess underneath

Hi Roy Page is still about still lives in the house attached to the yard. His son still a retained fireman and works at the Firs garage.Stanton engineering own the old atation site and yes they will not let anybody on site dont know why ? I haven’t heard the story about the safe but I might get a spade for xmas !

Perhaps they’re worried about liability if someone climbs the viaduct! I’ve climbed one of the piers, getting past the safety fencing! We deliver another local company to Hooky, Ramthorn Concrete; Run a 4 wheel ERF mixer with a self loader. Got some old lorries in their yard.

Roy Pages Yard Hook Norton, Roy started off as the local Coleman, then transfered to sand ballast and biulding supplies.
But to go back even further This was the yard where W H wallington & sons started before going to Walk Farm

The yard is now 4 or 5 houses.

Gleeds on the right coming out of Hooky to Banbury used to be John Gleed’ motorcycle dealership specializing in Bsa, Triumph & Norton. i asume that with the decline of the British bike industry that John diversified into skip hire. I spent many a saturday there as I owned a Bsa 650 Road Rocket at the time and it was a meeting place for about 7 or 8 of us British bikers

Some more Cowley photos of old, like Johnson’s Cafe, he did his best trade during strikes.
PC Brand was a formidable character, when I was a city bus driver , late 50s, his very prescence at Carfax on a saturday night kept things in order.
The Cowley Ironworks, they did mostly pre- fabrication of steel framework for civil engineering and buildings, Dykes Bros did a bit out of there.
One of Morris Motors own transporters

Any Cowley born people out there, I have other pictures (non transport) of days gone by.

Blimey, how I remeber going in Johnsons cafe, both as a lad with my Dad, in the 60’s, and as a driver in the 70’s when on for HW Dines.

Not sure if I’ve posted this before on here or on the old cafe thread, but does anyone remember “The San Remo” on the Witney Road, Eynsham near the Evenlode pub?
Another Eynsham cafe used more by the tipper drivers from the Stanton Harcourt quarries, was the Crossways on the Hanborough/Mill Street road. I’ve heard it also referred to as “The Whitehouse Cafe” Closed late 60s when the nearby housing estate was built. Apparently, San Remo was used more by long distance drivers and was well known for it’s ice cream…

Yeah I am thinking Wolsley, having looked at some pics today of both Pathfinder and Wolsley, the Pathfinder had double roll bumpers, so I will go for Wolsley 6/90.
