Willie Roadstar:
Overlooked this post somehow !! Tut Tut - The guy who lived next door to the club on high lane and drove for Morcap was named Holford, used to go to school with one of his sons - canât remember his name now, also next door, there was a guy who drove for a number a companies who was Popeyeâs Brother - Chris Oldaker.
You mean Dennis Holford who used to work for Berrisfords when I knew him.
Iâve told the tale on another thread about the time I met Dennis and Big Jack Banbury in Ankara on their way back from Teheran.
Popeye I know quite well,he was working for Chapman and Ball when I was working for Commercial Engineers, the FIAT agent that supplied C & Bâs FIAT trucks.I spoke to him only recently.
Willie Roadstar:
Further to an earlier post on here - I canât remeber Comarts ever going to Pakistan or India.!!And the name origanally did evolve from the word Comman Market in 71 when the UK was about to join, it was called Smith Bros or Smiths for Service before then, when my Dad started wiyth them.
We covered this earlier,I think I made the mistake of saying it was Comarts, when in fact it was Thor that went to Pakistan, intended going to India but couldnât get in!.
I think before Comart it was called Smiths. The boss on Comarts was named Clive Smith, almost went working for him when I was an O/D but never came to anything.

Hi All,
I have been talking to a mate who as very kindly lent me these photos of his Dad from the Thor days, Carl Burgess (in the photo) who was transport manager for Thor at the time, apparently did the 1st western commercial load into the USSR to Lenningrad, where the photos were taken, which was back in 72. carl later went on to set up DOW freight with a partner and then JSL, Jasons sorting me some photos of the JSL fleet, which I will post once I have scanned them.
Anybody else got any photos of JSL â â
Regards
Ant

Hi All,
Now we are going back, anybody remember this firm, I think its the 1st truck my Dad had when he started driving or one of the 1st, way before my time !!!

Wow yes.
I drove for Vic Wild a bit later than this pic.My uncle Harry McBeth drove for him about this era. This was in the days when a run to Cornwall was a weekâs trip!,finishing up delivering the load of bulk China clay on Saturday morning, with a shovel,no tippers in those days.
My uncle got me a job working for Vic in 1970 when he was esablished as the Wild Group. Some of the firms swallowed up in the group were:Gleave Transport,Maddens of Redruth,Tancocks of Exeter,a firm from Gobowen in Shropshire i forget the name of,and one or two more.
Vic would only operate Atkiâs and ERFâs with a Gardner and DB 'box. That was until Gardner went on strike just as Vic was replacing the fleet with Gardner 240âs.When Vic saw an Atki with Gardner 240 running in Herman Tideswellâs colours,(he was always an AEC man was Herman),Vic rang Gardners and told them to shove their 240âs.Out of spite he went and bought a pair of DAF 2600âs,the first of which was mine,as seen in my Avatar.
All that remains of the Wild Group today is Madderns of Exeter, stll in the old Wild colours.
There was also a Wild Transport of Rochester that used to run in the same colours but had no connection.
