No technical reason Dan, it was swapped off a shorter trailer.

Obviously it made loading bulky loads tricky but with heavy products it did get the weight where it was needed. I know what you mean about the other as we used to tip soya beans on Trafford park under a very low canopy.
Hi,I-Shifts
You mentioned Chelmarsh on another thread , when you think how big Boothâs was in the local area in various names and such a good fleet too ,they seem to disappear quite quickly.
Now you got me trying to remember the transport managers name-------Billâ â ?

I think the chap you are thinking about is Bill Bailey and yes you are correct they were very big in this area werenât they. I believe Boothâs, Grahams & Holmes from Epworth were all bought by the Simon group which in turn were owned by Cobelfret when they purchased an developed Killingholme wharf. Today it is part of the Hargreaves group and used to trade as Norec but still has some original Booths drivers and office staff. Also, I believe they continue with Booths biggest job which was handling, storage and transport of the petroleum coke from the Conoco Phillips oil refinery.
Hi, I-Shifts
Yes, Bill Bailey that was his name.
You mention Grahams, would they be the same Grahams who used to run black Thames Traders and I think Albions ,used to do a lot of ash and make ( or maybe just deliver ) breeze blocks? This was in the early 60âs. Worked from Island Carrs Estate at Brigg.
Holmes of Epworth, ran some F7 8 wheelers and some artics, painted red, finished up as part of Boothâs. I did a couple of weeks for them as an agency driver when the miners strike broke on the iron ore Immingham to Scunthorpe, I think that was where they dreamt up the Wacky Races idea!
This was about the time that Wellâs from Broughton finished and Dave Fawcett started, and also Standerlines ( I think I remember the name right ) from Broughton was winding up about this time. Certainly a time of change for the North Lincs area.

Hi Bassman, the only Holmes lorries I remember were F86 & F7 eight wheelers which were white with a yellow stripe. Grahams were as you said originally block manufacturers I think and were heavily involved with ash from the power stations as a raw material with some of the lorry bodies having âGraded Ashâ painted on them. I believe being involved in road haulage came later being run by the late Ray Towns with subbies including Brian Midgely, George Rose, Pete Webster, Keith Hanson and Pat Harrison. I will put some more Grahams pics on later. Cheers
There Is some Booths, Holmes and Grahams pics elsewhere on here that I put up. I used to work for Booths in Epworth.
Hi, Philybob
I only worked agency for a couple of weeks ,and they were nights for Holmes. Never classed myself as a proper tipper man but have done some tipper work over the years, mainly animal and poultry feed and raw materials inbound.
That was for W J Oldacres ,later Premier ,later Porters at Flixboroâ. Most of my work has been powder tank work, many years with Rugby and itâs successors.
Have worked in a small way with Pat Harrison and Brian Midgely.
Cheers Bassman
