Old Cafe's

harry_gill:
hiya,
Just a triviality Chris but was’nt the cafe at Alrewas known (pluralised) as the Trees or was it just me never reading the sign when using it and i did use it quite a lot multi years BC.
thanks harry long retired.

I only knew it as the Tree Harry, full of Sheffielders going home, cost a fortune in teas.
F.B.Atkins,the haulier had a cafe at Findern and the Airport (a dump) has been mentioned, but further down on the left near the Burton turn-off was the Y-pass which I used quite often.
Sorry Harry but I thought the Airport was rubbish, not a patch on the Tree and Oakamoor.

hiya,
Story of my life Chris never had very good taste, i’ll put up with owt.
thanks harry long retired.

Wasn’t it a father and son concern Mel?
If so I think the son was called Dave or David, not sure about the father.

The cafe on Shap ,was it also known as Redwings ? seen pics of that - two busses back 2 back .
Would put the link up but ime not that interweb literate
Google old transport cafes on Shap, good ole pics.

Hi Chris, I can see him now. I think he invented stuble, greasy black hair wore a grey nylon jacket smock. Another good old cafe Hill Top on A18 just outside Brigg

That’s him,a dirty scruffy little chuff with a runny nose.
I was trying to think of the name of that cafe t’other side of Brigg.IIRC it opened in the late 70s and was very popular.

Anyone remember"The Plastic Bag" as we used to call it,on the A14 @Alconbury,it was a rotten caravan with plastic bags on its roof to stop[it didnt]the rain getting in!Called in on our way down to Felixstowe with SeaTrain container.

Then there was the cafe @ Tallington, just by the railway crossing on the A16,did a cracking breakfast

There used to be a cafe in Donington,Lincs on the A52,I think it was called Frankies.I do remember it was open all night in the 60s.

One I used a lot Woodside on the A19 North bound also the one opposite on the South side but can’t remember the name, no prizes but who can Cheers Mel PS Still always think of Stable Girl & here husband Wagon Master at Thirsk are you still out there

The Woodside, northbound one was behind some trees wasn’t it Mel,in a sort of lay-by?
The southbound had a sloping park, but I can’t recall it’s name either. The Woodside opposite was better anyway.

That’s right Chris, But i always remember when i was a kid a driver getting killed at the Okeamoor crossing the road, no boubt he wasn’t the first or the last & I didn’t want to be one of the stats.

Hiya Chris,
was this the one that was on the corner where the road turned left for Boston. In the early 70s I stayed overnight there several times. All night long all you could here was wagons changing up and down the gearbox because of the junction. Think there was one room upstairs with god knows how many beds in it with just enough space to walk in between them. OHHH happy days. Not sure of his name now, but IIRC his dad had the pub over the road.Think it was called The Black Boy or Black Bull or Black something or other   I seem to remember my dad staying at the pub when he used to take my granddad with him.

Mel.
Ithought the woodside n/bound was better after the fire and it was re built. In the 80s i used to stop regular at the s/bound cafe [twice a week]and i cant remember the name either.Aah old age is a terrible thing.
regards dave.

hiya,
anyone remember the Pilar cafe on the Bacup to Burnley road at the junction with the road to Waterfoot always spotless and well used by Ben Barnes lads.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Ray.I wasn’t driving then,I was in the RAF in Norfolk,RAF Feltwell, and thumbed it home to Sheffield as often as I could.Turners of Soham had a depot at Costessey,Norwich in them days,1960-64 and did a Manchester trunk with a Grantham bus station changeover .I got many a lift with them from K.Lynn and that cafe was on the right towards Grantham.I can’t remember the road layout to be honest, but a lot of market men used it so it was a busy and noisy place at night. The pub was called the Black Bull I’m sure,as my auntie and uncle were teachers at Donington in the 40s and 50s and my uncle used to go in that pub I remember.I wonder if any trunkers changeover in bus stations nowadays?
The lifts with Turners were great as I was out of one motor and into another on the Manchester end, straight into Sheffield city centre and the same sundays nights going back - 2230 hrs in the Wicker,Sheffield and away back to Grantham, changeover and dropped off in Kings Lynn.“S” type Bedfords,BMCs and then LAD cabbed Dodges were the units they used. The Manchester lads used the old A616 from Newark to Sheffield via Ollerton instead of the A1 and you had to hang on like grim death
Wish I could remember the name of that cafe opposite the Woodside on the A19. :unamused:

Years ago two cafe’s on the A45 just before Cambridge, one was purchased by little Chef, the other was going for years, just before I retired, the other one was up for sale, I believe he wanted one and half million.

Hiya Chris,
sounds like the same cafe to me, remember now there was a lot of market motors about. In the late 50s early 60s a friend of mine had an Uncle who drove for Turners doing the night trunk from/to Manchester. Who knows, you may have had a lift from him. Small world or what.
Wish I could remember that Cafes name on the A19 as well. Mind you I wish I could remember a lot of others to
Do you remember one opening at Hazel Grove. Think it was called something like Legs Cafe. Because all the girls wore Bikinis. Couldn’t park for miles when it first opened. Believe the police had to come and sort out the traffic chaos

I cant remember the name here but do remember it as an old fuel station. I came past on Friday and it looked awfully closed. Not sure whether permanent or just well barricaded for the weekend.
