harry_gill:
hiya,
definitely on the A6 but can’t remember it’s name.
thanks harry long retired.
Yes boys it is definetly on the A6, but no it don’t begin with B. Strangely enough I took her who must be obeyed to look at
a car this morning. We had to head south down the old A6 from Bamber Bridge towards Chorley and as I drove past Walton
Summit I remembered years ago there was a cafe on the left heading South (i.e on the right heading north) I could not
remember the name of it but Linda who is a lanky lass thought it might have been The Brookfield, we are getting closer
regards Big Al
Here we go lads & lasses I think some one will get it from this picture, part of this building is still standing. A part of the old
bungalow had to be incorporated into the larger building to suit 1950’s planning regs. I last stayed here overnight, pre sleeper
cab days in 1965 regards Big Al
hiya,
knowing it was the A6 and having been in the cafe many times but just can’t remember the place name must qualify for a little sit in Mildred should we ever meet at a showground.
thanks harry long retired.

No problem at all Harry, even carry a small set of ali steps for old timers, which includes me regards Big Al
Hi,
It doesn’t begin with B. Oh dear That’s the one I thought it was as well. Now then, was it the one at the top end of Garstang, name escapes me, which has now got a big hotel built there?
The other cafe on the A6 at Clayton Brook was a very busy place, again so long ago names have faded, but for some reason I keep thinking, Red Rose.

Big Al:
Dave the Renegade:
Halfway House on the A41 between Whitchurch and Tern Hill.No sorry boys and girls no one got it yet, i will publish another picture tomorrow and
maybe all will become clear. Speaking of Halfway House anyone remember the Halfway House
between Dundee and Arbroath ? also known as The ■■■■■ Cottageregards Big Al
hi al,i remember the ■■■■■ cottage but never used it as we always stayed at the amulree on union st dundee, a yorkshireman called jack blackburn ran the digs, lots of yorkshire lads used them digs, onwards, edwards of bradford, big bill of cherry st transport sheffield stopped there every tuesday and wednesday night, only cafe we used was the one at johnshaven, mother and son owned it, all home cooking
in them days the pups closed at 9.30pm and it took them 5mins to pull a pint of heavy, happy days al. bumper
hiya,
By jove Bumper you’ve rattled the old grey matter there, stayed at the Amulree many times in the 60s, i remember when they were filling the berths in to make a landing place for the new road bridge you was allowed to park on the filled areas until construction of the bridge got underway, good grub and plenty of it and always nice and warm Dundee was a good night out in those days, nuff said, lived in Lancashire at that time not getting to the Northeast until the early 70s, been here ever since.

Give the Man cigar, well done that man, it is of course the Mayfield just a short way from Dirty Dicks on the other side of the road.
I actually passed it today on my way up to Keswick for the ■■■■■■■■ Trunk Run. I stopped and took a picture, on the way back from Keswick
I took a journey down memory lane and came over Shap it evoked some memories, but was sad to see nothing remains of the Jungle Cafe.
It is a sales place for static caravan type homes. I took a few pictures and will put them up later. regards Big Al
hiya,
Al why did’nt i remember the Mayfield it’s a wonder i don’t cluck and grunt the amount of bacon and eggs i’ve had in there, a long time ago though have’nt been that way for donkey’s years.

Taken Sunday 6th Sept 2009 returning from The ■■■■■■■■ Trunk road run, The Mayfield as it is today, now The Crofters Hotel.
Returning from the ■■■■■■■■ Trunk run on Sunday the 6th of September I decided to take a nostalgic run down the Old A6 from Penrith through Shap Village
and over Shap Fell, a route I had taken many times in the 60’s. I was surprised by the lack of traffic on the old road I did not pass more then a dozen vehicles
between Shap and Kendall. Shap village remains much as I had remembered it, I stopped at the layby on Shap summit and read the memorial to the men and
women who had helped build the road and keep it open during bad weather. Dropping down the incline from the summit I came on the site of the old Jungle
cafe now a static caravan sales site. I remembered the times I had pulled in there as a young man fully loaded on a run to Scotland, there used to be a company
from Liverpool ran red 6 wheeler Albion box vans (Keenan’s) They must have run overloaded as they crawled up the ascent to Shap fell in bottom gear, woe betide
you if you came up behind them. You would sit in The Jungle watching these guys and when they made a move you would slurp down your tea and make a beeline
for the car park, sometime (maybe on purpose to see the reaction) they would only be going to the toilet. Is my memory playing tricks or was there a large sign
over the counter saying “Ask for Big Bertha here” (a wrecker truck not a lady behind the counter ) Oh happy days my journey brought back good memories,
funny how you remember the good ones and not the bad. Hope you enjoy these memories regards Big Al

Dave was it the two buses back to back aside the south bound layby (The Eagles Nest ? ) regards Alan
hiya,
preferred the Eagles Nest to the Jungle but at main mealtimes you had a job getting parked although mid morning and mid afternoon no problems, anyone know when the “Nest” closed it’s doors, it was run by very nice people who were always pleasant.
thanks harry long retired.

Harry I would think it would be just after the M6 opened, I think by that time the buses had gone and the old wooden shack was there on the oppasit side. regards Big Al
hiya,
yes Al do remember the newer establishment being erected on the other side of the road and used that a few times still under the same management team, i don’t suppose people would have expected the old Shap dying as quickly as it did, from choc-a-block one day to zero traffic the next sign of the times i guess.
thanks harry long retired.
Yes al i think you are right, dont mind me memorys goin owd age, cheers mate for the info.
