hiya,
tell you what BigG-Unit the Kernel must have done a good brekkie for Del and Rodders to come all the way from London, it was good though used it regular in the 60s and early 70s, like all the good grub stops, gone.
thanks harry long retired.
hiya harry,if you had been to the kernels for a night out you wont be going for the breakfast in the morning you would be going for what you could get for afters the night before in the nightclub that was attached.
cheers steve (ex Geo Davies & Brain Haulage).
I remember Wagsie bringing that up about the night club and it’s ‘clientele’ on the Transport Cafe thread some time back. What I couldn’t understand though was why he was there at night 'cos he only lived a couple of miles up the road!!
When I started driving many years before the motorways opened I used to travel along the old A18 from Doncaster to Scunthorpe.
I remember two old buses that were used as transport cafes. One was up near Tudworth Hall Corner, very close to where the M180
leaves the M18. The other one was by Pilfrey bridge before you got to Althorpe, it was an old Ben Sketcher bus. I remember Benny’s
Bus from Swinefleet near Goole because pre war my dad had driven for them along with Harry Beavers who went on to drive for Lincs
Road Car. The Bus was parked in the 1/2 mile long laybye where part of the old A18 had run, I believe there was an RAC box there,
in the late 50’s the RAC man had to salute your car if you had an RAC badge, my brother had an old post war Austin Ruby 7 and the
RAC man would remove his hat and give it a majestic bow. The cafe on the bus was run by Bill Spivey from Crowle, he used to have a
filling station in Crowle Market place where i used to fill up my 1948 O type 6 ton petrol Bedford lorry at about 4/6d per gall 22.5p
Just about a mile further east in the village of Althorpe opposit the Dolphin pub was a transport cafe whose name eludes me, but i
think the lady who owned it was called Mrs Mack ? Anyone else out there remember ? regards Big Al
A 47 Cambs, Wisbech ?Bretts or Thomas used to run out of there? May have been Guyhurn(spelling). . keeping my options open or what
Failing that its the Hilltop on the A1.
hi just seen the post re old cafes, does anybody remember bert n gerts on regent rd salford n the jungle cafe on the shap both from 1970s.
I remember when my old man(Rip) used to be away all week doing Scotch. Fair play he was driving a Thames Trader in the days before motorways and the Preston by pass
Probably spent too much time out the back of the Jungle

Remember Ken Thomas had cafe that way ? Here is another clue in the early 50’s business must have been good because they
extended the bungalow into larger building to accomodate bed and breakfast. Had to cut a bit off the top of this picture or
the name of the construction company would give the game away

Hi Big Al,
Are those lovely lassies from Lancashire?
Ray
Hi Al, I have still got your address so I shall give you a call in April while we are over there. .
The Bungalow that I was thinking of was actually a pub opposite the lorry park in Paisley in the early seventies, although like Lemonmouth said I thought that your cafe was The Coronation Cafe on the A5 near Brownhills.
As a last guess if I said it’s on the A6 and began with a B would I be on the right road .
Best regards Steve.
hiya,
definitely on the A6 but can’t remember it’s name.
thanks harry long retired.
