hiya, well curnock used that cafe a lot up to about 1972 and the phone box, then started tramping up and down the a1 never had cause to use that stretch of road since that time brings back memories, thanks harry long retired.
On the subject of Walsall, used to park in the car/ lorry park and use the Orange Tree pub a fair bit in the 80s.
Done some good grub in there - well it tasted ok after a few pints of Banks"s and there were some fine looking women that used to frequent said establishment- well they looked ok after a few more pints
Is the pub still there?

A few pages ago someone mentioned for Devon Frying Pan, in the 60ās Frying Pan started off in an old coach but it caught fire. There was also Maidendown Stage and I think Log Cabin was also in the same area but I was yet to start school at that time. There was also Lewdown very popular in the 80ās / 90ās
In Cornwall as well as Smokie Joeās at Scorrier in the late 60ās there was Tomās Transport Cafe, on the old by-pass between Treleigh and Avers Garage, Tomās is now the Inn for all Seasons it has also been the Waggoners and called something else but I canāt remember what. Penlan was also popular in the 70ās then it closed down for a time before reopening.
Someone else mentioned Bristol, I canāt remember the name but there used to be a transport cafe, down near Redcliffe Church in late 60ās / 70ās
Apologies if these have been mentioned before and I missed it
Longwayround:
There was a real greasy spoon quite close to Brands Hatch.I stopped there more than once, though more to stave off starvation than to enjoy the unremarkable quality of the food.
Thinking about it the food wasnāt bad, certainly better than school slop, it was the worn out fixtures and general filth that was the turn off,and margerine.nāt remember the name,if it had one.
The Oasis ( dir London ) or the Hollys (dir Maidstone )
Isnāt the one on the London bound side of the old A20 next to Astrans old yard?
I also remember stopping for breakfast at a cafe on the old A45 at Spaldwick. And Bythorn. And there was also one just next to the river at Thrapston.
And the one on the old A2 between Faversham and Sittingbourne was the Norton Cafe.I think the village near there was called Norton.

Anybody remember these from the N.West?
The Dunkirk, near Capenhurst
Wrens Nest, Shaw
Cafe Roma, in Bury
Dusty Miller,ā ā Think it was on the A56 between Ramsbottom and Edenfield but not to sure.
Ray
Hiya Chris,
The Dunkirk was on the way to Queensferry, but on the left hand coming from Stanlow between A41 and A540. Just had a thought, if you went to where the M56 (until recently) ended then turned right, back towards Stanlow refineries, it was just up there on the right hand side. Handy place for going back to Manchester on a Dodgy, so Iāve been told
Hiya Harry,
The Cafe Roma was not to far from the centre of Bury, off Bond street between Wash Lane and Rochdale road (A58). Ideally situated for Walmersley road when coming or going from Rochdale/Manchester etc.
Now then Chris and Harry. How about all the cafes that used to be on the East Lancs road. You must have been in them a time or two.
Ray
Well,Arthurās was one on the East Lancs and I remember one near Haydock. There were others too but the names and locations escape me.
In the good old queueing days at Liverpool docks when you were told to come back next day there was a company from Sheffield called Robert Earl, did a lot of steel. The oneās that didnāt get tipped ran back to Arthurs and all got in one unit and went home to Sheffield on a multi-dodgy .
Ray,are you sure the Dunkirk was on the right coming back to Stanlow? I thought it was on the left, not far from some lights at the A540 Heswall junction.
Mind you the last time I was in there was 1977,so Iām probably wrong.
Hiya Chris,
Pretty certain thatās where it was, itās probably been closed now for 30 odd years. But I do have a faint recollection of another one near by. When leaving Queensferry/Shotton if you took the left fork towards Birkenhead I think there was one on the left hand side almost on the traffic lights, donāt know what itās called though, itās one of those stretches of roads I didnāt use that often. Think it was called Ledsham crossroads.
The cafe at Haydock was Evelyns, a bit further down at Lowton was the New Island, which I think was the last one to close.
Like the multi dodgy bit, did that a couple of times. Used to leave the rear number plate off the unit in case of photographers on bridges.

Your right boys that was the Dunkirk but who remembers the cafe behind the garage on the opersite side of the road two hundred yards towards Stanlow? We used to stop there most weeks after collecting steel from shotton for the continent mid 70s till mid 80s but for the life of me cannot remember the name.

Evelyns, thats the one Ray and the New Island, brings it all back to me now.Iāve had a dodgy from the New Island back to Sheffield once or twice. You could always get a lift into Manchester and then another over Woodhead. You couldnāt do it now without a struggle.
I think the cafe that dessert driver Keith mentioned is the one Iām thinking about, not the Dunkirk.I do recall it being open as late as maybe 3-00pm on a Saturday ,having loaded out of the Summers/BSC coking plant for Sheffield. There was always a rake/herd of Shell etc.drivers from the Port in there tossing it off. Do you remember the cafe in Frodsham on the A56 way before the M was built?
Rear number plate-taking-off was a regular for me as well.
Hiya Chris,
Now youāve got me thinking, was this the one on the left going out of Frodsham just before the iron bridge? You could turn off the road just before it and then join the main road higher up.
There was another on the A556(A54?) between Kelsall and Tarvin I think it was, where Esso drivers did their impression of Shell drivers.
Must say that was a fair dodgy. How long did that used to take?
