Well that is good news, Regards Larry a Derry customer from 1957.
Well Harry the Derry lives to fight another day, so we can still go back & have breakfast, even under new management it should be good, as long its not the same owner as the Q/H, it should be OK. see you at the do & we can make arrangements to do down when it suits you, Regards Larry.

hiya,
Meant to reply in a similar vein yesterday but couldn’t get into Trucknet last evening and was out most of the day, got a calender for you from Johnnie (Sammyopposite) will bring it to the do for you and then we can arrange dining arrangements at the “new” Derry, see you at the “do” Larry, don’t forget the hip flask remember they only had Irish last time and I suppose that suffices for “semi skilled” whiskey drinkers,PS will be leaving the 240 Gardner powered bathchair at home this time I fear a certain person on here might just be tempted to tamper with the braking system.
thanks harry long retired

Harry I promise I won’t need to tamper with the brakes on the bathchair, that little drop of “Irish” will be
enough to set you back on your heels. I think it might be either Bushmills Black or my other favourite
the wonderfull Tullamore. best regards Kev. Ps any sign of Big Brian turning out?

hiya,
Kev the last time I spoke to Brian he was spending the Christmas period with his sister and family in London, so no it looks like he won’t be joining us on the 28th he’s very difficult to get in touch with not often at home.

Reminiscing the stories of sadly long-gone Transport Cafes , my Dad told me this story many years ago , so I ll share it on here. He was travelling south on the A 6 one morning in early December , in the early 1960
s, and decided to pull in at the Mayfield Cafe at Garstang. There were other wagons parked in the large parking area , and a lot of shouting and swearing coming from one driver, as others tried to calm him down.
Apparently this now-irate driver had driven from somewhere in Scotland through the early hours of that morning , and stopped at the Mayfield for his breakfast . He was transporting a large Christmas Tree to its destination in the Midlands , for its display in a town centre.
He had eaten his breakfast , and returned to his wagon , to find … someone of dubious parentage had sawn off the
6 feet or so off the top of the tree , and nicked it !!!
Rather annoying , don`t you think ?!
Cheers , cattle wagon man.
Anymore news about The Derry ■■> Regards Larry.
I used to use the Mayfield going North and Dirty Dicks opposite going South, it saved crossing the traffic. One day I pulled into the Mayfield and saw a 6 wheel Regent tanker with the leading rear wheel wobbling a bit. I chased the driver across the car park shouting “stop, your wheel is coming off” he had a good laugh at me and explained it was Primrose conversion and the axle steered. That would be about 1963 when I had a little Ford Trader on C licence to Alf McAlpine shifting stone for the M6 contruction.
Do you remember Dirty ■■■■’s with all the budgies he kept in cages.
Aye it was well named Dirtey Dicks, I prefered the Mayfield myself, slept there many times en route Manchester to Rutherglen 50/60s era, Happy Days Eh, Larry.

There’s some nice houses built on the site where Dirty Dicks used to be !! Cheers Dennis.
I remember the Red House Cafe at Woodlands at Doncaster, Good grub & open 24/7, The only problem there was when some of the drivers had been to the Tally Ho Boozer along the road, they used to ■■■■ in the wash basins in the bedrooms rather than go along the corridor to the toilet, no bloody thought for us decent living drivers Eh, But still they were happy days at least, Regards Larry.
I mentioned Bull Hill Cafe at Darwin quite some time ago, owned by the Westermans Family, who also ran a few wagons, It would be nice to here from anyone who new them, 7 used the Cafe, Regards Larry.
I stayed at the Red House a few times when I worked out of BP Saltend and was running back from the south.
I remember the Bull Hill cafe also, I think it was nearly opposite Jos Walsh’s yard.
I may be wrong but I think the Bull Hill cafe eventually became an Indian or Chinese resturant called Ocean palace.
lads any idea where this cafe was ,Mark

I think it’s on the north circular where it now meets the M11 before the flyover was built.
Thats right it was opposite Josh,s depot & it is a Curry House, What a waste, the grub in there when it was Bull Hill was top notch, the bacon was Silver Link Brand, I used to get some to take home in those good old days, Regards Larry.
found this old map of that area of london perhaps someone can put a marker on where the cafe was !!

hiya,
Darwen Larry, not Darwin the latter is Down Under in Oz yes I knew the Bull Hill Cafe and the Westermans but never ever used the place I worked for Walshy at the yard nearby so it was a bit near to call in, if old Joe had seen you he’d have docked your wages I only lived half a mile from there and can turn out a canny bacon buttie myself, but fair play the place was well patronised and had had a good reputation.
thanks harry long retired.
Harry ive got your gear that you left at th do, Regards Larry.
