Does anyone remember ROSIE at the BELL BAR hatfield, she could reverse artic as good as any driver.Didnae fancy the wellies.
HI ATKYMAN I REMEMBER ROSIE SHE USE TO COME INTO THE ■■■■ OF THE NORTH PUB WHEN I MANEGER THERE DID YOU USE THE PUB I MIGHT KNOW YOU
I went down to the Derry yesterday, sort of a pilgrimage you might say, I took two pals of mine Ralph Crow, & Alan Keen, we had an excellent breakfast, & a good old natter about the good old days, I first went in there 1957, but someone had called in & said they went in 1953, Its a pity it is closing down , It was a good watering hole in my oppinion, not many of them left sadley to say, The good old times , Regards Larry.
I remember staying at the Bell Bar on the 23th December 1974. A lady said that she would sleep the night with any driver who could take her North of Carlisle in the morning.
I don’t think I recall Rosie as I wasn’t a regular there.
Well lads the Derry,s gone, The next one on the A1, I think is the BP, one South of F/Bridge, then the next one ? would I be right & say Stibbington at the Nene Valley Bridge., Regards Larry.

I’m a bit of touch mesen Larry but would it be Markham Moor,Morleys old place,or are you just on about southbound side? The old Compass place was still going at Colsterworth and maybe that excuse for a cafe at Gonerby,Tony’s new place from years back.

Well the old Morleys is long gone its a some sort of truck strop, I was there about12 years ago & it was ■■■■■ to say the least, not what the old drivers like us were used to, I only stayed overnight once the evening meal was sticking to the plate, some sort of beef concoction, I didnt bother with breakfast, I allways had my emergencey rations in the cupboard under the bunk of cource, so I survived to live another day, Like we allways did, & allways will, Hats Off to all the long distance drivers of the good old days that are still about, Regards Larry
Yes Chris after tony got thousands of drivers to sign a petition so he could build it when they opened the bypass, and by way of thanks he sold out to trust house fortes.

Harry its a pity you missed the the trip down to the Derry I enjoyed the breakfastm along with Ralph & Alan, the crack was first class, its allways sad to me when one of the old watering holes ceases, These young drivers will never no what they missed out on or what it was all about in the gold old hard working days ? Regards Larry

hiya,
Would have enjoyed the run out Larry but still working on the house just awaiting the carpet cleaner coming now the plastering and the decorating are finished but the furniture moving is a no no for my good lady at the moment she’s still quite sore and under doctors orders not to lift anything, so getting away until “job done” isn’t an option just yet, but should be “free” after a couple more days, did you know that Cookies had a pump on the Derry filled many a tank and my belly on quite a few occasions, end of an era eh.
thanks harry long retired.
Well Harry, Im sure you would have enjoyed it , the food was spot on 3 clean plates, we took some photos , so you will be able to see them , when they get onto this thread, So I will see you on the 28th, all going well, Regards Larry

Hi Harry
You mention Freddie Guest in one of your posts, Is this the same Freddie as in this pic him and 1 me at Londra in Istanbul.
hiya,
Yes that’s Freddie worked for Bowkers when I knew him last with him in 1972 he was driving a long nosed Merc and he still had a strong Scouse accent great lad to run with but it was only the UK in those days I never got further than the odd run to Ireland when I was doing the job, is he still about ■■, he’ll certainly be over retirement age by now, have lost touch with all the guys I knew in the North West having lived and worked in the North East since 1972.
thanks harry long retired.
Well now you oldies, remember the phrase, Cafes come & cafes go but you can allways rely on Lawsons, [Londonderry Lodge]. well its gone as you probabley know, I would rather it had been the Q/H. But there again it could be next, Regards Larry
Does anyone remember the cafe on the A48 by Highnam roundabout just outside Gloucester on the Chepstow road? I can remember it in the '70’s, not much to look at but it was alright if you needed to stop for a sarnie. Just wondered what it was called. I think there’s some houses on the site where it once stood…
