Thanks to Sugar Ray for posting this in another forum, it certainly made me chuckle .
We used to stop at Chris’s Cafe near Stokenchurch on the A40 on the way to High Wycombe in the early seventies, is it still there ?.
I.I.R.C. they were nice clean digs, the M40 started at Stokenchurch and finished just before Beaconsfield which I think was then Junction 5 to Junction 3 and the other lads referred to it as the Wycombe by Pass.
Maybe I should of put this on the " What Did We Do Before Nightheaters Thread " .
hi.does anybody remember bert n gerts on regent rd salford in the 70s

Hi Ken.It will have altered round there since the 70s but was the place you mentioned on the left on Regent Road after Water Street and before Ordsall Lane?
Do you remember a cafe on Liverpool Street? You turned left off Langworthy Road and it was on the right, there was a pub on the corner but it may have got burned out by the “Salford Lads” later. It served the best pie, chips and gravy in Lancs.
hi chris, the cafe i mentioned was on the left but not to sure how far up .not sure about the one on liverpool st though.
Hi Chris and Ken, you have both just reminded me of another cafe in the area. I can’t think of the name of the road unless it was on Regent Road but it was somewhere near the old Salford bus garage on I think Frederick Street. It was on your left as you were travelling towards the A6 and I.I.R.C. on the right was the old Salford Race Track. I bet Harry Gill knows this one . it was near a bridge that crossed the River Irwell and in the seventies they built student accomodation across the road from it. It was the mention of pie and chips that sparked this one off, Hollands Pies of course
.
Mushrooman,
I used to use that cafe,“The Cromwell Road Cafe”,when I was involved John Jones Excavations who were contracted to carryout the muck shifting for the proposed Mancunian Way,this was our cafe of choice, great food and crack,it changed to a bistro bar later, last time I eat there was in late 90’s,so dont know if its still there.
It was on the corner of Haddon Street and Cromwell Road,in Charlestown,{really Salford!!]like you said, opposite the old Salford Race Track…oh happy days,or was it daze!!!
Take it easy,
David
hiya
Well 5th wheel’s spot on there Mushrooman, in fact that’s about the only one i ever used in that neck of the woods, from Bury on the A56 turn right into Cheetham Hill St ( i think there was Salford van hire on the corner) road changes to Cromwell Rd the cafe was there on left before you went over the river a good grub stop in those times in my case the late 50s to the mid 60s hit Broad Lane/St turn right straight on for the “Pool” turn left along Trafford rd until you hit the A56 again turn right “The Smoke” next stop for me would have been the Sunset Penkridge, what a memory eh’ surprise myself sometimes, now what day is it.
Well done 5th Wheel and Harry, Cromwell Road was the name of the road that I couldn’t remember

I think i’ve got that cafe on my list…Is it on the A4 (bath road)between Theale and Aldermaston wharf. and the name of the cafe IICR the tea pot.
its a good breakfast in there but have not been in there for 7/8 years since i retired.I think it was famous for having a train carrage at the rear years ago
and possibly some fair lorries near by.If you go to google maps and look up Theale go West and its within the first 1/2 dozen buildings on the left with a space all round the building.

Would that cafe be what used to be called MAC’S but now renamed MAX John? A big teapot on the roof! When I lived in Reading we used to call on our way back from the Test Station at Newbury, I believe that they have a truck gathering there each year. The TOWER CAFE was on the other side of the A4 near Beenham.

It looks like it to me Windrush. I used to go into Air products Aldermaston and a roofing firm on Rob Youngs est just down the road from their.Windrush did you go to the Gravel pits as you go into Aldermaston■■? do you know Rob Young■■? he restores Fodens and ford Zodiacs.Rob is restoring a Marston valley Foden
And a Holvis 8 legger with the deep chock rails. i think they came out of Rush green.I know when they are finished they will look new.I think the Marston Valley Foden was driven by his uncle.I must ring him we have’nt spoken for a few years.
I’ve seen that picture before somewhere and I think - think mind you - that it’s at Gretna.
Somebody will know…
