Chris Webb:
Anybody remember a cafe/b and b place on the errrrr A36? between Warminster and Salisbury at Codford St.Mary.Two women ran it IIRC and I think it was next to a filling station.I used a couple of times in the 70s.

Dead right Chris. As usual a mind like a finely honed razor. What is your secret? Codford Cafe still there.I still use it on the odd occasion. ( And the cafe). Seasons greetings to all on here. Best regards Charlie.

Hi Charlie.Well, that cafe was a decent place then.I had loaded at Baglan Bay for ISR Hythe and stopped in Warminster to make enquiries about digs.A bloke stopped and told me about Codford and it was about 8-00pm when I got there. They made me a meal, even at that time
No secret about my memory mate,I can remember things that happened fourty years ago but can’t recall yesterdays happenings.
Have a good Xmas and a Happy New Year. :sunglasses:

In the 70s i broke down on shap and was towed into andersons[leyland agents]in penrith.I stayed the night in transport digs right across the road.Do any of you older ones remember the name of it.
regards dave.

Dafdave, I remember two or three in the town, but names have never been my strong point, but latter years, I used Penrith truck stop.

Hi ya I’ve been down to Essex for xmas two cafe’s which are still open. The Owl cafe London bound on the A127. and the other cafe on the old road between
Raileigh and wickford can’ot remember the name of it and drove past it this weekend.(I think WOODY R)can tell us he lives nr their.

Hi ya This is a head scratcher for Desert Driver…What was the name of the cafe ajcent to the sky diving club next to the Hanger/grain store on the A41. I called in the cafe on odd occasions before it closed .18 years ago maybe. They built about 5 quite large houses there now, was it called the Coranation■■?
IT was’nt the type of place you’ld have a wedding if you know what i mean. Then going back further in time there was a cafe where the A41 car sales is now.
And another cafe on the corner about 500 yards north of the A41 car sales on the A442 turning for Hodnet, and another cafe by the Manor House wood road.
which is a transport yard now i think.Three cafes in less than a mile in that spot. You’ll need the thinking cap on now Desert Driver mind you i can’nt remember the names some of them was fallen down and was told they had been cafes.
John

Are you talking about a cafe near the old RAF camp at Tern Hill John,as I vaguely recall stopping near there once?

hiya,
There was a cafe on the front part of Atkins of Derby’s yard used it regular i’m aware Atkins are long gone but is the cafe still there and was it owned by the hauliers we alway’s referred to it as “Atkins” when letting the lads know where you was having a cuppa.
thanks harry long retired.

Hi Chris there WAS a cafe right across from the RAF camp at the side of a pub called the Stormer Petrol IICR. That cafe closed 10 /12 years ago.
Then just south of the RAF camp was the Halfway House…open…close… open…close…indian restraunt…close then a chap called Pete took
the place on and made it top notch, After two or three years BANG hart attack and he was gone (Big pitty)he was a nice chap, his wife tried
to keep it going but it was to much work.IICR the staff had a go but it shut possibly 5 years ago.Our mate desert driver will help us out with a date.
The Raven seems to be having a good run at the moment. On that juction A41/49 their’s the Raven next door the Midway next to that a coach cafe
and next again the Raven pub where you can get a meal and a coffee any time. There was also a little chef but thats now gone Then nothing for a 30
mile radius. That makes sence its like waiting for a bus wait for ages then to many to choose from.

Hi Harry, Theirs somthing going on at Atkins yard i just looked it up on Google earth. It must be some sort of warehousing depot.
The yard is marked out for at least 160 trailers,But there is no sign of a cafe that has certainly gone.I think this new age driver
dos’nt need a cafe. The com…r works out where your going to deliver to and makes sure that you get their early and you can book
your off duty time while waiting.I think its called accumilated time.so you can have a healthy Banana and a bottle of flavored water.
As us older drivers know no jobs was ever advertised in the job centre, It was by word of mouth in the cafe.Thats why the boss
did’nt like you going in to Atkins in case you herd of a job coming up.And if a job was on the cards i’ve known drivers leave a lorry
on a lorry park and start for someone else,Then ring in to say they have jacked that job in and tell them where the lorry is parked.
john

hiya,
Thanks for that 3300John and another one bites the dust tell you what i’d need a big lunch box nowadays it was nearly always three meals a journey (about 200 miles plus) after about 75 miles a nosebag was a must, always had to have a nippy motor for playing catch-up, i worked for lots of hauliers but never left one parked always took it back to the yard to get my car, but i know it happened, as you say jobs was always got by word of mouth, but what has been said about some agencies on here i might have left a few hither and thither would have changed my job to something sensible if agencies had been the only driving jobs on offer.
thanks harry long retired.

Atkins of Derby shut the cafe a long time ago along with the fuel station, the depot is now NYK & Megacarrier mainly Toyota work. most of the French office staff went to GBE as well as some of the Derby office.

Hi boys
I have a few days off eating turkey and come back on here to see your trying to fry my brain…
Firstly sorry allthough I remember all these places being open it’s a long time ago and cannot remember the names, but I have seen them posted on here before maybe on this thread.Starting at Grindly Brook cafe (closed) on the A41 Whichurch side of Dave Roberts garage on the left heading south, the Cherry tree (closed)oppisite the Ravan pub(still open)at Prees Heath as John said. The Ravan cafe and the Midway (both open) but the cafe that the busses used is now an Indion(quite good). Heading south A41 as you said just across the heath on the right (closed and built on). Just a point do any of you oldder lads remember that strech of the A41 from the roundabout to the next cafe ( owned by the Prodger familly, now owned by diger Davies who bought it with hope of getting permition to run his fleet from there, refused!)during the war that strech was closed to trafic and everyone had to use the A49 across the heath then turn left before the garden centre to rejoin the A41? Next by the turning to Hodnet was a garage(closed) 200 yds south cafe (closed) then A41 motors closed again. Next 400 yds on left before what used to be TurnHill lights now roundabout was another cafe (closed) Now over roundabout cafe on left (now shop)next to Stormy Petral pub ( big bikers night every Thursday) Across airfield cafe on right Halfway (closed last time called Larans)
It was amusing to see in times gone by if one would reduce the price of the teas by 1 penny all the old truckers would flock there then the next day it would be a different cafe. You could allways tell who was the cheepest by where Summers or Green Bros were parked.

Regards Keith

Hi boys
The cafe 400 yds before Turnhill roundabout was the Tudor

Regards Keith.

PS brains hurting now

Hi…Keith you beat me on the Grindley brook cafe, then just come to me was the cafe with the Jack Duckworth stonework on the left by old
chapel across from the locks path.I was the last customer to use that place.I had tipped a pallet by the station in Whichurch and stopped there
on my way back to Chester,I thought it better than going back to prees.Big mistake as i left the chap told me i was the last customer and
locked the door.that must have been 1996…Keith did you have a left ■■■■■■ 6 wheeler bonneted Scania with a tipper body and a 5th wheel
underneth to pull a trailer…Just tried to post i can’nt remember the Tudor did it have fuel pumps?? only you could see a pull in before they put
that hatched centre bit in about 10 years ago half a mile before the roundabout.
thanks john.

Hi boys
John the cafe at Grindly Brook is now owned by Dave Roberts from the garage,in fact he owns all the properties on that side of the road except the old Chapel now converted into a house. The Tudor at Turn Hill I don’t think had pumps but may be wrong. The road was altered there and widened to put in the hatches for vehicels turning into the little lane in the bottom. We had diggers working there on that job and all the rubbish was tipped in the field where the cafe was. There is still the hardstanding there where the truckpark was allthough now covered in grass.
The T cabed Scania used to belong to my brother Robert (The Heavey Mob) he has sold it now but still lives at the family home at Tybroughton.Heres a couple of photos I think i’ve may have posted them somwhere on here before.

Regards Keith

hiya,
Keith what was the T cabbed Scania capable of tugging looks like it would have been ideal for the the loco’s i dragged around BC, sure looked the part and i bet it had a heater capable of keeping your toes warm.
