Getting back to old cafes, I remember I used to call at least 7 cafes starting from Eye on the A47 to great yarmouth, anyone who can remember the names.
Aye.

If you two do not come up with better answers, I will make sure you do not have a Mae West in your cabin, when you go on the cruise!

Harold’s 24 hour cafe at Holbeach. When you went to bed after your dinner you left a note behind the counter with reg. no. and wake up time and someone came and put you on the shake in the morning.
Pre-sleeper cab days of course, that warm caff was very welcoming as you stretched frozen bones on winter’s mornings.
I remember Harold used to collect the rarer pre-decimal pennies and would pay up to half a crown for one he wanted.
Is it still there?
Rons cafe at Gedney (happy eater A17) that was spot on. He told me off for kibblingon on his chair so i paid him for one and always kibbled.
Just out side Kings Lynn on the A47 was a bus/cafe in a lay by always very clean and good food.Five or so miles along the A47 was East leake??
the cafe was behind a garage on the right . Just above average but a welcoming sight.Dose that cafe still open going into Lincoln (A47. The sign said 4 wheelers 6 wheelers but certainly no artics) cheeky sod.I bet he’s still open, I hav’nt been past in 30 years I supose its by passed now.
Going away from Lincolnshire and into Staffordshire the Robin Hood cafe at Rushton Spencer was my local, It was only a wooden hut but he (Geoff)made
some money in that place, You’d go in there at 6 in a morning it was full of drivers (20 or so). The A50 put stop to that cafe it is better to go Uttoxeter route.
Than Ashbourne/ Leek. Not to say more speed camera’s than you can mention.
John
Well done Canada Steve, Spardo, 3300John, I remember the cafes but not always the names, that bus one was a good breakfast, also there was one by the Bridge, where you could buy a load of farmers wares after you left Wisbech in the east direction, a couple of cafes after King Lyn on the way. to Fakenham.
Were either of these two at the Jungle, you Norman or Harry,or maybe Chris.
Cheers Dave.

I wasn’t going to stop Dave but I just piked Harry off parking up with his Haytons Albion so I parked me Octopus up and bought him a tea.
Norman was in the back of the cafe chatting the birds up,waiting for his changeover.
That’s a great picture by the way.
Hi Chris,
Its a postcard Alan Spillett gave me about 10 years ago, taken from one of his pics.
Cheers Dave.
Too true Chris, only a idiot would be outside in that weather.
Chris,Harry and Norm, you sure that you aren’t hiding behind these South Wales boys,at the Windrush.

Never been in the Windrush Dave, was it on the old A40? Not my territory down there, but I reckon that’s a Mansel Davies Scammell parked up.
Harry and Norman will probably know that cafe, especially if there was any fiddle.
Hi Chris,
Yes it was a Mansel Davies Scammell. The Windrush was on the A40,between Northleach and Burford,on the Cotswolds, sadly pulled down 25 years ago, possibly longer.
Cheers Dave.

Right, well I’ve been to Burford,a nice little town not far from Witney. We had a few days in the Cotswolds staying at Stow and went to Burford. That road was really busy through the town I remember.

Yes still busy Chris, not quite as much transport, they are using the M4,from South Wales, but loads more cars now,its a nice area the Cotswolds, but like everywhere it gets very busy in the summer, also quite busy the rest of the year with tourists.
Cheers Dave.

Hi ianto,
Can’t remember the one at Fisons, even though I went to Avonmouth in the early sixties,do remember the two at the services, the top one overlooking the bridge became a BT place, but what it is now I don’t know. The present one is only a little chef, I stopped going there a couple of years ago,its crap food and expensive.
Cheers Dave.
hi dave the services at the seven bridge is the same as all services expensive the cafe at avonmouth was opposite fisons on the righthand side as you came down the road from the severn bridge it was a small hut.two other popular cafes used to be at little hereford popular with the steel lads on the way to birmingham from the old duport steelworks in llanelli turned into an antique shop now and also llywel motel between llandovery and brecon its totaly derelic now ianto
I love those pictures, bring back happy memories. My Albion wasn’t as old fashioned as that one, mine was an LAD, but the Leyland (how do you know it’s an Otto Chris ?), that brings it back. The great big flat area under the screen, plain square speedo and little else along with the giant orange mushroom turn indicator.
But the star of the show is the Invincible. The best of the ‘old’ motors (I categorise ‘old’ as anything pre-Swede ) I loved that spacious cab with its wrap around screen, cigarette lighter (what luxury
), early sun visor and weird pull up ratchet brake that disappeared into the floor and had to be stamped on to release.
The Jungle is a bit of a memory jerker too, arriving down there in one piece with the brakes coming nicely to the boil was a big relief.
