Great pictures there Matt, so many of the Oil Companies had smart livereies, compared to today where so many of them have virtually no markings at all, or just some pokey little sticker on the cab door that you need binoculars or magnifying glass to read! The AEC with the Ergomatic cabs always looked jusy right as Fuel Tankers, it was as if they were designed specially for the Oil Companies.

HI CHRIS
WHEN I WAS ON THE BURMAH CONTRACT THEY CHANGED THE LIVERY TO THE MISTICAL BURMESE LION, IT WAS A SMART LIVERY. WHEN BURMAH WERE TAKEN OVER BY SAVE PETROL THE CONTRACT WAS RUN BY LINFOX OF AUSTRALIA ,THEY REMOVED ALL THE BURMAH LIVERIES AND PAINTED ALL TANKERS WHITE, THE REASON FOR THAT WAS THEY COULD RUN FUEL FOR ANY COMPANY, WE USED TO DELIVER FOR (BURMAH…SAVE…THAMES…SPARTON PETROLEUM) ALL WITH THE SAME TANKER OUT OF VARIOUS TERMINALS IN SCOTLAND. ITS A PITY BECAUSE THERE WERE SOME SMART LIVERIES. REGARDS MATT.
They all went the same, i was on contract to Phillips Petrolium for 30 odd years we went good livery to delivery paint as per photo’s.

I think that all the big Oil Cos.and supermarkets use various contractors nowadays i.e.DHL, Hoyer,Wincanton ect.ect.plus they can sell all the fuel they produce without really competing with one another so less reason to advertise. This is also the reason why the “brothers” are kicking up because they are losing their grip “unionwise” and can no longer have one pay rate nationwide! The whole fuel tanker scene has become fragmented and there is always another contractor ready to step in and oust the incumbent one! Lifes sure is a ■■■■■ for the tanker boys!!! Bewick.
I agree with that ,I was on the petroplus job in grangemouth, we also had johnston of bathgate drivers doing the same job but we were on differant wages,Were taken over by gb oils who said the petroplus job does not pay, (brogan had the phillips …petroplus contract for 30years), so it must have paid someone, johnston still do the p/plus work in scotland. I left gb oils when they gave up the p/plus work.big mistake i am unemployed 6 weeks now after 40 years …35 on fuel tanks .

I agree with that ,I was on the petroplus contact ingrangemouth with BROGAN FUELS we also had JOHNSTON FUELS running the petroplus job ,We were on a different wage for doing the same job, then GBoils bought brogans out I was told the petroplus job did not pay so they were giving it up. (brogan had this contract for 30 years phillips&petrplus) I left just after that because i did not want to go back to doing opencast mines etc,Johnston are still doing the p plus work in scotland ,so it must pay someone, after 35years on fuel tanks thats all ive done i am now unemployed 6 weeks now.
With you on that ,i retired last may, just at the right time i think,i wish you luck with work in the future.vic.
You are right in what you say Bewick. You can see where my love of Tankers comes from from the 2nd post on this forum, I grew up on them & virtually lived at my Dads old Depot. All the years travelling with the Old Man, about 5 Years on Fuel tankers myself for Flitwick Oil & Watson Fuels, & 16 years on Cryogenic Tankers for Air Products & now Cryoservice (as driver & Depot Supervisor) has shown me 1 problem that arises with a lot, not all! but a lot of Tanker Drivers, is that I have found a lot of them become very cocooned! Tanker work on the whole has always been one of the better paid driving jobs, but the drivers don’t tend to mix as much with other drivers, no waiting at RDCs, waiting for boats, obviously fuel guys on the whole don’t have nights-out, so they lose touch I think with what’s going on in the rest of the Transport world, & don’t get to hear what other drivers have to do & put up with, & what they are paid! I have some younger drivers at my place that great lads as they are, as far as Haulage goes they live in cloud cuckoo land, if you asked them what a dolly was they would say “Teeny Tiny Tears!”, they are young & haven’t been around much, this isn’t their fault, we all know that the old rope & sheet general haulage & European days have gone now, I was lucky & I did this work & enjoyed it, a lot have done more but I not in competition with anyone & if someone has been further than me then lets have a pint & tell me your stories! But my guys think that all lorry drivers earn the money they do, & unfortunately some think that because they have good conditions, good pay, pensions, BUPA etc that this makes them more special, it doesn’t! I have found over the years that a lot of tanker guys contribute to their own downfall, because the ego’s get a bit too big, 7 a lot of the runs etc become too much like hard work for them, they are forever crying to the shop-stewards, until eventually they price themselves out of the market, cos they forget that, the people they are pulling for are Oil/Fuel/Gas manufactures/sellers, they are not road hauliers! So all they want is their product delivered as cheaply as possible to maximise their profits, so they don’t care what sticker is on the cab door!

Hi chris ,as i said in my last post i have been involved in the petroleum industry for 38years 35 driving, when some of the companies get taken over you find they are all on different wages, this causes a lot of unrest because we are all doing the same job, it seems like this is what the companies want driver against driver. dont think the union can do mutch about this,at my last job we had 5 different wage agreements on the go at the same time, some got paid sick pay others did not this caused a lot of unrest. some got time & half some didn’t’
Memories!

Working hard in the sunshine.
Hi anyone have any photos of a company back in the 1980s called LINFOX .I worked for them on the Burmah contract in Grangemouth , They lost the contract to p&o and i have never heard of them again, They were an Australian company not a bad lot to work for, We had FH12 volvos sleeper cabs great lorries to drive. Like a lot of drivers i never carried a camera as it was a pain handing it into security everytime you went to load .They used to park the tankers up in (i think it was sadlers yard) on haverton hill road. They also used to park up at Lindsey oil refinery i used to do some change overs at these depots when i worked for them.
i worked for linfox 1st on burmah then on fina,i started on an fh12 in full linfox livery red yellow and black,it was nick named the carnival motor, then had a new scania 124[p reg] on fina.i was based on the thames then always loaded our second jobs from buncefield.sorry no photos either
Hi europleb i was the same, the fh12 unit i had was full linfox livery the tank was painted burmah livery. I used to get some strange looks ,I think our transport managers name was dave brandwood, I wish i had carried a camera with me back then, Someone might have photos somewhere.Mine was the only unit in scotland painted like this, we had 8 artics and 2 rigids in grangemouth, When SAVE petroleum took over burmah we were down to 1 artc within 2…3years of them taking over,Its a pity because linfox were not the worst i have worked for.
Hi Chaps, there’s some Burmah Linfox pics on page 5 of the Oil and Fuels companies thread in the photo forum, Might be able to find some more later
I Used to work with Dave Brandwood when he was at Tankfreight, decent fella, did he come from BP, Gulf or one of the other bigger oil companies?
