Oil companies using sub-contractors

Years ago, the big oil companies all ran their own fleets. Nowadays it’s all done by outside contractors. When did this change come about?

I would think 20+ years ago lol When Haulage Companys could do it cheaper than own a account Companys can? When did Hoyner come and operate over here? then Wincantski joined the race i think?

Was it Esso that started the trend?

It’s not surprising that they could do it cheaper, the wages at the oil company’s were extremely high from memory. In addition a friend of mine who was a fleet engineer (with Shell I think) told me that it was their policy to replace all the airbrake components on a trailer at every MOT whether they needed to or not. Their maintenance costs must have been quite substantial.

Yes you are correct wages were high at the time, and Yes SHELL did waste money for no reason, i take the wages where down to Unions though? and the rest down to Useless management taking backhanders:wink::wink:, made some people very rich, could name a few lol
Now the job is a race to the bottom sadley, one extreme to another. like most Own a Count Companies nowadays.

The pay was good (I did 25 years), I know that locally Shell Leeds got rid of their own fleet (they had a terminal in Hunslet, it was fed by rail and canal barge). I’ve no idea what the pay rates are now, I was out of it (sadly) before it all went out to contractors.
I must say when I was in it I had 25 happy years, we had good pay, good equipment, good managers, etc etc. We all knew it wouldn’t last
