Obtaining a C1 licence?

How do.

Couple of jobs I want to apply for need a C1 licence. DVLA site says I can get one of those at 18 (I’m 20)… obviously I passed my test after 1997, if that changes anything.
How would I go about getting one, and how much would it cost?

Cheers
Pete

Hi PeteG.

If you click the link in my sig and then the link to the procedure it will tell you HOW to go about it
How far are you from being 21 as the C1 and C test are the same apart from the gearbox and the C is 6 inches wider and a bit longer (generally) than the C1
Cost for C1 is usually the same as for C

That sounds like a plan to me Rog.

Pete, you’d obviously be better to wait 'til you’re 21 and get on the ladder to the C+E licence mate. Don’t waste money doing your C1, only to stump up more dosh in a year to get your C. World’s your oyster then

Cheers guys. I’m only six months from being 21 - and the C then C+E route is the one I’m aiming for then anyway - so I’ll just hang on til then. Didn’t know if it was a “large vehicle” or just a Transit van-type thing, where you could hire the van and do the test.
As said, no point paying out twice to do essentially the same thing, so thanks for the advice, it’s very much appreciated. goes back to lurking once more

Just been in touch with DVLA and they said that you cannot start the ball rolling at all till you are 21 - not even the medical :frowning: :frowning:
You could have all the forms ready though and these can be downloaded or obtained by post from DVLA 01792 782341

There is, of course, one thing you could do - start practising by using your current vehicle and printing off the safety questions to memorise/practise (to a certain degree).
You could also pass your advanced test within 6 months for a very low fee (usually under £100) with a ROSPA or IAM group and that WILL improve your general driving standard as well as, possibly, reducing your insurance premiums.
A lot of LGV instructors have said that the general driving standard of trainees coming to do the LGV training is well below par especially where forward thinking & planning is concerned.

it could be a transit thing minimum spec vehicle is :

Category C1

A medium sized lorry with a maximum authorised mass (MAM) of at least 4 tonnes, at least 5 metres in length, capable of 80 km/h (50 mph) and with a closed box cargo compartment at least as wide and as high as the cab. Tachograph, ABS, seatbelts and examiner mirrors.

TRANSPORT OFFICE

in your situation I’d wait and do C

Thought just occured to me…
If you applied for a C1 provisional NOW and did the medical and passed the theory, would they still be valid if you then applied for a C provisional at 21

On phone to DVLA… and DSA…
DVLA - medical for C1 will be valid for 1 year and will cover C provisional
DSA - C1 theory will be valid for C and is valid for 2 years

Looks like I was wrong about getting the ball rolling…

Cheers Rog, you’re a star. I’ll just hang about til I’m 21, do it in one go, I think.

Re: advanced test, I’m the same PeteG that posts every now and then on ADUK, TA and PH… passed the Rospa test at 18…

Since I was looking about for driving-tpye jobs, am I reading this right (regarding PCV driving) -

"
Buses with or without trailers

Any bus with more than eight passenger seats with a trailer up to 750kg - Cat D - 21*

*Age 17 if member of armed forces

*Age 18

a) while learning to drive or taking a passenger carrying vehicle (PCV) test

b) after passing a PCV test when:

  • driving on a regular service where the route does not exceed 50km
  • driving a PCV constructed to carry no more than 16 passengers
  • the vehicle is operated under a public service vehicle (PSV) operator’s licence or permit

c) not engaged in the carriage of passengers
"

Am I right in thinking that if I wanted to take the D test for my own personal use - ie, to drive a bus around the country, I’d have to be 21… but if I got onto it through a bus company, I’d be able to do it now?

Not too hot on PCV & D - my field is LGV so would not like to comment on it and give you the wrong info.

An advanced driver going for LGV :exclamation: - A dream come true for any instructor       - NAH, I must be dreaming :unamused: :unamused:

PS found our conversation on ADUK

The way I understand it is that the vehicle must be under an ‘O’ licence but you can drive under either of the other two points ie if the route is less than 50km you’re not restricted to less than 16 seats. Does that make sense

To PeteG - if I was intent on getting my LGV ASAP at the age you are now, then I would apply for C1 provisional, pass medical & theory, then wait a few months to apply for C provisional and have LGV training & test booked ready for as soon as I was 21.
It would also give me a few months to check out a few LGV training schools.

Wish I was 21 again… but I will be OVER 49 this year

Was going to say the same thing myself but Rog beat me to it. Good advice I think.

If you are thinking of gettng all the entitlements for your licence including coach driving then I would go for the multiple licence.
When you send off for your provisional Cat C licence then also tick the Cat D box on the same application form.

The ‘E’ part covers you for both truck trailers and coach trailers if I am not mistaken.
