Norman Ingram:
On BBC4 last week was a program about the forces of the B.A.O.R. and their familyās as they served in Germany, and how our tanks destroyed cobble stone villages and crops, I have told of when I was on a recovery tank near a bridge at Hoy and waiting in case a tank broke down on the bridge, I wish I had a camera, the damage a hundred conquerors did to the cobble road on the edge of the village. While there a VW came wizzing around the bend and hit the track of our Centurian recovery tank, the German Police ask if we wanted to press charges against the driver, I jumped down and looked, not a scratch, I said no, he will just have to pay for hiis own repairs.
hiya,
You should have driven the Centurion over the bleedinā VW revenge
for the Luftwaffe bombing our houses āyes twoā in Bootle during
WW2 and making me and my family sleep in an air-raid shelter.

Sounds as if Harry hasnāt forgiven the Germans yet,so thereās no point in trying to sell him a Mercedes or a VW.
Cheerās Dave.

hiya,
Dave all is forgiven, even I am too young to know or care what it was
all about, we have friends in Dusseldorf and when my health was a lot
better we visited them sometimes, and they came to our place quite
a few times all very amicable, my youngest daughter drives a VW Iāve
used it occasionally (usually when Itās low on petrol) it is a nice drive it
performs well and Iāve had a couple of āHerbiesā when a young fellahā
although I wasnāt impressed with them, my Brother in Law has a new
āKompressorā would love that but I have never driven it he changes it
every three years, heās a lot better āheeledā than me and can afford
it, but so long as my old two pedal Toyota Corolla (2005) lasts a bit
longer thatāll do for me I mainly use the bus nowadays and if the boss
wasnāt a driver Iād do without a motor Iāve been at the wheel for long
enough, come May this year Iāve held a licence firstly motorcycle for
sixty one years I think Iām entitled to hang the keys up.

Got to be honest Harry,a few years back I wouldnāt have dreamt of buying a foreign vehicle. Now there arenāt any British vehicles,we havenāt a choice. I have been very pleased with my Mercedes sprinter which I will have had for seven years in April. Both of my brother-in-laws have had Volkswagenās at different times. One had a Beetle a few years back, One of my Uncles who fought in WW2 and was at the concentration camps clearing up at the end of the war had three new VW polo estates and said they were the best cars he ever had.
Bit behind you with the motorcycle licence Harry,49 years last December was the first one I held.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Dave you could always dig into the mattress and buy totally British, not too
far from you either (Malvern) a nice Morgan would go down quite a treat
Iām sure, I used to deliver a part load usually a couple of 8x12 foot plates
from the old Consett Iron Company, I believe these were to make engine
mountings,I was honoured with guided tour of the factory one trip, very
interesting it was too, proper craftsmen doing a proper job, it did make
the rest of the trip usually 20 tons of wide plates to Appledore a bit more
pleasureable.

I think there is a five year waiting list for a Morgan Harry.Would be a bit low for me,one of those.I have never hankered after a sports car.Sat to near the road for me,even when I was fit. A nice big saloon car is more to my liking. When I bought cars I had Cortinaās and Cavalierās and lastly a Vectra, medium sized cars, didnāt like small cars much.Iām quite happy with my vans.I can look down on the 4X4 drivers and see some leg.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
A pal of mine bought a seven year old Lada in his local pub to get him to and
froā a new job, he parted with it after thirteen years service due to a timing
failure (poor maintainence-blown engine) and prior to this only braking, bulbs,
tyres and the odd battery it sailed through the annual MOT without any fuss,
just goes to show the old Lada had lots of knockers, me included but they did
obviously put at least one decent one together.
thanks harry, long retired.

A neighbour of mine had Lada Riva 4X4 back in the early 1990ās it would go anywhere. It was heavy on petrol and didnāt have much storage space, but offroad it was good.It had a 1600cc Fiat engine.
Cheers Dave.
hi all ex b r s overland drivers i saw a program on t v a long time ago a film crew went with a driver on a middle east run do any of you remember it that is the reason i became a truck driver but the furthest i have been is to romania for charity to hospitals with a wincanton leyland daf and later with a dawsons milton.keynes volvo i have the greatest respect for you guys i do not drive trucks any more after a accedent at work in 99 but had done 30years and retired good health and happyness yours mark neill
Yes Mark, they done one trip with Astran, also the one with Blue Peter, and BRS Overland, but as I have said before they had trouble with the Turkish customs, when they went through and returned, they opened up the film canisters and spoiled the films, they had to fake a desert scene at a sandpit outside Northampton. If they had all the filming they done, they could have done a series like Ice truckers.
