McBurney Transport, I found this photo on their Facebook site and I hope that they don’t mind me posting it on here. Quite frankly it is one of the best photos of a lorry that I’ve ever seen!
Northern Irish Hauliers no longer with us is the subject of this thread
… and to boot it the worst lookin 730 on the road!

Full O The Pipe:
Saturday night on the Larne Line (thats what we called the road) was always flat out with the Boys all heading for the boat. Trucks from all over the province and some from the South came this way. Most of the operators are no longer with us,Kelly Freight,Persitt International,Dukes,Seaforde,Murphy Int,Joe Millar to name but a few.It was great as a kid,141s,F12s,142s,mercs,Transcons,you could tell the trucks by engine noise before you seen them. The loss of all the hauliers liverys over the years (by way of takeovers, retirement, etc) and the loss of the variety of motors being run,to me make the roads duller today than what they used to be. Would like to know what you all think about this Cheers Steve
Hiya mate imade a mistake connor frieght took over Wisecraft NOT Myatt if you know any connor drivers give my regards some good lads. thanks
Always ran top tackle and they’d sail past you on the road, those Ulstermen and their coleagues from south o border had some fine machinery indeed! Used to see alot of them in BOC Skem and Warrington, namely McBurneys, Joseph Baird (who I think Norman Mc took over) Dukes of course, Derry Bros (they had a iirc West Indian chap driving for them, a real character!) Hughes, Interland (who used loads of different operators for traction and poss one of them was TC or Mannfreight - did they end up as Norfolk Line?) Sawyers to name but a few. There was another haulier ran white and blue v8 Scanias with an Armagh phone no but the name escapes me. Were Reids from the North (tomorrows deliveries today or something like that - and they meant it!) are tipper firm Tinellys still going and Lagans had some nice kit. I’m racking my poor brains to try and think of some more. Great memories on here btw
rathlin:
He once did a run from Belfast to oran in algeria and back and a run from belfast to Manchester and back all in the same week. It was talked about around Murphys for months, and nobody else ever tried to match it.
Come on get real man - you’d have to do 70mph everywhere (yeah a tad slow for some back then ) but hit all the boats just right and clear and tip Algeria within a working day too! Just pointing out, not sniping Sad to see the likes of Millars, East West and TCs gone

I don’t have to get real, Morris left Murphys yard saturday morning was in marseille monday morning caught mondays ferry, in Oran tuesday was tipped on the boat they never let him off it, back Marseille wednesday loaded apples around Avignon for Belfast market on wednesday afternoon and was back in murphys yard friday morning, changed trailers with a load of bacon for Manchester tipped saturday morning, then changed over trailers at ferrywheels yard at speke airport and was back in murphys yard saturday night. He was driving a transcontinental with a 290 ■■■■■■■ which was capable of around 78 mph and he drove her to her limit. This was the late 70s
There are still plenty of drivers from Murphys around from that era, I suggest you ask them or even Hugh Murphy himself, I am not a liar.
Are Birds still on the go. I used to do Fisher Body at Dundonald years ago and used to run down the A 75 with some of the Irish lads. I remember 6 or 8 of us running back up the 75 and some of the motors were passing in some pretty mad places and I thought they are bloody nuts but I found what channel they were using on the CB and the lead motor was saying " after the white Cortina the road is clear" and sure enough when the white Cortina came past us they were off again and I thought sod this I am joining in as well. Made your heart beat a bit faster but good fun.

Slab Murphy:
A couple I remember, Capper and Lamb, and Dungannon Transport.
Yes Mr Murphy I remember Cappers (did they become Capper Trading or something similar? Green motors IIRC) and wasn’t there a firm called Foxfield, I seem to recall a lot of these firms worked for Moy Park poultry amongst others
Lance Biscomb:
Can anyone tell me who owned Persitt International?
Persitt was an amalgamation of Terry Liggett (Liggett Haulage) and a frenchman named Persimmon who was a buyer for offal for rungis market.
Persitt is made up from both names
