North Wales Haulage company's

Always been a lot of Deeside wagons on that route as you say Trevor.Have over the years seen a lot of wagons from your part of the country down this way.
Cheers Dave.

most of the Shotton lads used this road to s wales , as it was a better option then the mid wales one ,down threw Welshpool and builth which was actually a bit shorter . thankyou Trevor

The loads of coated steel they hauled down from Shotton - mostly went to European Profiles at Llandybie .
We hauled loads of the finished products all over the UK from Llandybie Ammanford.
European Profiles was sold to Corus in the 90s.- It was later closed down and the finished products are now made at the Shotton Works,-- saving a lot of haulage.
regards - Hywel.

Hi Trevor,
The cafe was at Winforton the village before you get to Whitney on Wye,it closed in the 1970’s.As you say it was a good cafe and was very busy in its day.I think the owners retired, its now a house and there is a store and online business selling fishing tackle on what was the lorry park. The Boat at Whitney on Wye is still going and does a good restaurant trade.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Trevor,
There was a bad railway bridge by Whitney Toll Bridge, one of Sharples drivers and one of Oliver Harts or Kendricks drivers had a head on there in the 1960’s,both were killed.
I think there was eight wheelers based at Eardisley station yard. They were either Bristols or Maudesleys.I always thought they were Steel Company of Wales lorries or RTB. A chap called Morgan from Eardisley was in charge. There were about eight of them all parked in twos very neatly.I used to look out for them if I went that way on a weekend with my Dad in a car as we went over the railway bridge. The cafe this side of Brecon was at Bronllys, never stopped there myself, but it looked busy.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,
It was BRS that had the changeover yard at Eardisley
The Bristols and AEC 8 leggers with Briton Ferry Steel on them were BRS lorries
The most of them came down Brecon side of the Beacons out of cog.
regards - Hywel.

Thanks for that Hywel.I can well imagine them doing that.I will see if I can get some photo’s of those lorries. The managers son still lives in Eardisley.I will ask around.
Cheers Dave.

I can remember Sam Longson’s drivers in two stroke Fodens overtaking me coming down Brecon Beacons and in various other places in the late 1960’s Hywel. They didn’t get past me on the uphill when I had Philpotts Bedford KM,it was me doing the overtaking then.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Dave,
Those Briton Ferry Steel were having their breaks at the Story Arms on the Beacons.
You have probably got Allan Spillets print showing them parked up with Abernant’s Atki at Story Arms.
I remeber on of the 8 leggers failing to start off turning left on the old brecon traffic lights . He ran back accross the road and hit a shop window with the overhang steel bars.
Them Sam Longson is another story. They used to have night outs in Llandovery pubs.
Is it snowing with you now ? regards - Hywel.

Hi Dave,
Those Briton Ferry Steel were having their breaks at the Bishops Meadow on the Beacons.

Hi Hywel,
Just had a power cut, took me ages to log back on.Bishops Meadow, that’s the cafe Trevor was referring too,not Bronllys.I haven’t got Alan’s print of Bishops Meadow, but I have got one of he Storey Arms with steel wagons parked outside.
It was snowing quite heavy a while ago.I haven’t looked lately, been to busy finding passwords to log back onto these sites.
Cheers Dave.

I know I’ve mentioned this before but one of my favourite runs from Baglan to Sheffield loaded on a saturday was via Pontardawe/Ystrad Whatever and up by Cray to Brecon and Leominster then to Tenbury and Kidderminster and the M5 at Quinton. It was such a change from A48 to Newport and uppards from there and far more scenic. You could also turn right in Craven Arms and take a back whack via Leintwardine going back empty to South Wales,I followed one of Coastal Roadways that way, very entertaining it was,me in a Mandator and him with an ERF “A” series with a ■■■■■■■■■■■■■ days.

Here’s Alan Spilletts pirint of the Storey Arms for you Hywel and Trevor, not as good as seeing the print which hasn’t scanned to well off a post card which Alan sent me.
Cheers Dave.

Hello Dave and Trevor ,
very interesting info on this thread does Trevor mean the old railway bridge before Kinnersley by the poultry farm if so a Briton ferry or BRS Swansea AEC did hit this bridge , the driver had to wait all day for recovery from the depot . That would be in the 60s just after the line had closed .
Also speaking of accidents on this road at Three ■■■■■ .an Oliver Hart Seddon artic overturned and was retrieved by Burgoynes Foden recovery truck .
Eardisley station yard as well as Briton ferry , BRS Dudley would occasionally change over here with BRS Hereford regards Keith

Hi Keith,
Yes I think that is the one that Trevor meant.I remember one or two of Griff Fenders going off the road, and one hitting a house next to the Rhydspence when the road went behind the pub.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Chris,
I think its Abernant Transport Glynneath.Hywel will probably know better than I do.My copy of the postcard doesn’t do Alan Spilletts painting justice.
Cheers Dave.
