North Africa work

Unfortunately :frowning: !

i second that cliff walked thru them doors many times it was like diffrent world in there 2 outside. usually wobbled out tho

Are there driving licence checks when you drive in ALGERIA or any of the north African countries, ie do they have a HGV type check ,as it would be possible for a brit or another european to drive a truck in any of those countries with a car licence if doubling up,also does the green card system still exist.

Not as if i want to,or would be ever driving a truck again just curious .do they have driving hours laws ?no! i am not senile, when you do not know something the fact of finding new things out makes you a little wiser.

well m8 when iwas on morrocco your ok on uk license but first time in u get customs id number put into your passport and its checked each time u enter usually on ship .as 4 driving rules there wernt any really but always had tacho in anyway got stopped few times enroute 2 cassablanca but they didnt really know what they looking at . any probs a few marlboro or a packet usually sorted it happy times

Yes, you needed to be able to produce a proper licence. Most of the time, you could get away with producing your IDP (International Driving Permit) which was translated into Arabic on one of the final pages. But I doubt if you would ever get away with driving a lorry on a car licence in North Africa. Robert

Here’s Toetapper at the bottom of Pamplona on way home from Morroco.

This was Metal Micky’s wagon, though I did take it down to Morocco on at least one trip. Robert

I’ve heard drivers who knew drivers who went to North Africa for Eric Vick (like it says on the radiator grille) but I have never, ever seen a picture of one over there. Well, good ol’ Truckerash has found this image taken in 1975 by a Roger Squires on holiday in Tangiers, Morocco! It shows an EV B-series ERF in the port. Robert

hi robert can see daf 2800/scania/and spanish dodge m8 wheres the erf. they tell me the ports way diffrent now all changed for the worse says tony bradfield spoke 2 him just few mths ago as he retired

Left to right: Pegaso, Barrieros Dodge, Scania LB, ERF B-series. No DAF! The new port is miles away from the old one in the town that we loved to hate! Robert

tks for clearing that one up robert but must be going blind still cant see erf neva mind

Robert, sorry mate but that ain’t a ERF… That’s a DAF…

And if I recall correctly they (daf) only rescued one failing English lorry manufacturer…

ERF is probably in Guarroman waiting for parts !!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

Tin hats out hahaha

Well yes. Now, I’ve had a really good look I reckon you are right and it’s a DAF (and I’ve just had a communication from Truckerash who thinks so too!). Alas. Never mind, you mentioned Guarroman: that cheered me up! What a fantastic Spanish truck stop that used to be. Drank many a Larios-tonica in there with North Africa drivers - happy days! Sorry to have give a false alarm  .Robert

No worries Robert, but yes you are correct was a nice place to aim for, sparkling enormous shower rooms, and I can still taste the liver and onion that the used to have, yum,

Only thing I used to find there as only being a European breaker, none of the Africa squad didn’t talk to much… Mannys and Arfurs gang and a few Adolf and Adolf lot used to be a bit “clicky”

I remember listening to Bruno v Tyson in the parking there… 96 ■■ Went in after hearing it on the radio and had a beer and tried to strike up a conversation with one of Mann drivers and being extremely blanked as I was “only” going to Almeria…

I pulled for Manno for a short time but ran with them for several years. It was a big company so you had a real mixed bag in there, ranging from proper gentlemen of the road who’d do anything for anyone in trouble right down to one-trippers who went out ready to fight the world and returned to suburban skip work in a hurry (if they didn’t get banged up for drug running on the way back!). Robert

Toetapper loading in casablanca me being guardian. Can’t remember the name of the factory.

I overtook this yesterday (08/09/2015) on the A26 (in France) Northbound…

The company only exists now as part of the Jost Group… :frowning:

ye used to see them regulars in/out tangiers

I think we’ve sorted the reason for no pics of Eric Vick on North Africa work: they didn’t go. It was another Gloucestershire haulier, CW Vick (no relation), that sent lorries to Morocco on a contract for Lister engines. Robert
