North Africa work

On the way to Algeceras for ferry to Tangier.

On the way to Algeceras for ferry to Tangier.

Fine looking wagon, Cliff. And those big DAFs were great for that job. I drove a lot of different DAFs down to Morocco. You must have carried on quite a bit after I packed it up: when did you come off North Africa work? Robert

Evening all, you know as this poor old geriatric never travelled as far as you Gentlemen did…apart from a singularly unhappy few months in Maroc…(Rather abbreviated by me leaping from my Berliet Maroc company Renault 4TL, when I saw a “local” dispatching…(in a very cruel way), a rather handsome Anglo Nubian Goat), and giving him…in very plain English…a B… good hiding…(I cannot countenance cruelty to animals in any form)…and I was back on the Caravelle to Paris that very same night…and a “mega” , (in modern parlance) Bolll…ing!!!

Then the management sent me to the Press Liason Department, …and I made a balls of that too!!!

So off to the USA…and that was Great!!!

But back to North Africa…I had become very close to one of my clients, Transports Chapuis, of Lyon.( Part Government funded), they ran a mixture of Saviem, 4x2s, and 6x4, 340 V8 MAN powered outfits, (as well as their poor quality neighbour Berliet TR 356 v8s), on trans Africa work.

Paris-Lagos-Paris…and yes, they did go both ways, Algeirs, (naturally), Tamanrasset, Agadez, Lagos. All the units on this “job” were 6x4 Saviem 340s, coupled to Trailor single wheeled tri axle tilts, bearing the motto, France-Nigeria-France.

I have given all my photographs, and details of these lorries to a pal of mine, who is a great model creator down in Narbonne.

If he wins out and creates the models of these lorries that he wishes to create, I will let you all know…

But what a journey, and what drivers these men where…they regarded Tehran…as a “local”"!!!

Cheerio for now.
