Yes you are right Chris, they were loaded for the market runs that night, parked outside Ken Swallow’s house at Woodhouse Mill, my old man use to drive 1 for him . Are you related to john webb
he used to work for my uncle, John Hepplestone Beighton Sheffield on Norfolk Line in the 80’s.He had the blue & white Volvo’s with the name plates Freedom Fighter, Trucker One, Chrome Dome, Blue Peter, on the front
In reply to Deisel Dave , the trailers you are on about were “Pam de Jong” and i think they were used to carry bacons side the short length was so that stillages could be loaded 2 high also it cut down on the shipping costs as it was charged by the metre. I used the Norfolk line ferry from Gt. Yarmouth when i used to transport snooker tablse for my cousin who makes them in Loughborough, it was a handy reload for me as i used to live in Earith and loaded back for Minnaar’s. Good old days !

As SRichardson mentions, Murfitts Worked with NorfolkLine for a long time, and still were early 90s although it had waned a bit by then. We used to get roped in to pull them if we were found hiding somewhere with a dual-height fifth wheel, Kodak at Hemel (tipping) and Platt & Hill at Oldham (loading) being two regular jobs I remember nowFrom photos I’ve seen H J Calver from Stradbroke must have been with them early too?
My conspiracy theory is that Norfolk Line had some input into Murfitts or was it just the similar colours they used? certainly closely tied with work in the early days iiac
Online research shows that it was originally called Norfolk Lijn and was founded by a Dutch chap called Reemus in 1961.
He sold the company to UniLevers in 1973

Hi all,I use to load Norfolk line trailers in Aspabruk i the south of Sweden a couple of yers ago.It says Nor Cargo but it is Norfolk so is the blue scania behinde.
Here is one more,my old girl loaded whit chocolate in Stockholm.Of to Gotenburgh then put the trailer on the ferry to the U.K
Used to do Swiss/UK via Norfolk Line. Scheveningen-Gt.Yarmouth.Grim unfriendly crew,Indonesian cook, flat bottom boat.Once had to wait 4 days in Holland waiting for the storm to subside & the locals hated foreign truckers.Norfolk Line office crowd v.good & helpful.Yarmouth lads were OK & up for the craik.Nothing good to say about those times but I was down on my luck with my first ever mortgage. The only good thing to come out of it was never to work for crap outfits ever again-you think it will be temporary but goes on & on like toothache!! .
I.I.R.C. didn’t Norfolk Line have a depot in Heywood near Manchester in the 70’s/ 80’s .

Yes they did and that was my finest hour for them as i dropped 1 of their trailers there from Yarmouth and never pulled 1 again hated the job
One of the first local hauliers for Norfolk Line Great Yarmouth was Foulkes (Great Yarmouth), other firms pulling for them were Carter Brothers (Wymondham), Murfitts of Littleport (who were eventually bought out by Norfolk Line when they got into trouble themselves), H G Barber (Bradwell), Walter Lanham & Sons (Great Ormesby), Roffes of Sutton Bridge, Hepplestones of Sheffield, Russels of Bath, Shepherds (?), Ken Swallow of Yorkshire, J D Fairweather of Great Yarmouth. O/Ds on Norfolk Line Great Yarmouth included: Trevor Matthews, Ted Mellon, Les Carver, Micky Devlin, Derek Brooks, Paddy George, Ronny Hudson, Norman Beck, John Leggett (JFL), Ray Waterton, Dave Willis, Ernie Nicholls, Brian & Jumbo Flemming, plus many many more I can’t remember at the moment.
Norfolk Line Great Yarmouth had some Volvo F86’s who’s drivers included Danny Cox, Peter Barber, Gareth Cox, and Jack Graver.
I used to love going with me Dad in the holidays to Bird Eyes so I could see all the Norfolk Line O/D parked up on the quay Trever Matthews had some nice kit and there was some Scanias with a bird painted on the rear cab pannel.Ironically years later I bought a Matthews F88 XEX72M
little 240 16speed a great motor.

I pulled out of Heywood for a while but couldn’t make enough so transferred back to Yarmouth, Keith was distraught that I was moving, he took it personally and I think it made his stutter worse!!

Dennis and Noman Manning I think you mean. The Matthews you are probably thinking about would be Trevor, who still has a big fleet.
Cheers Haddy.
Manning, how are the boys doing? I know that Sparky ended up in Swiss. The last time I saw Norman was in Southern Italy & I gave him a jump start on his Transcon for McFarland.
Here’s a couple from my Norfolk Line days:
