Using the A346 and A338, as a through route doesn’t seem sensible to me anyway. It is less distance than using the M4, A34, M27, but I doubt it saves time or money.
I regularly had to drive small roads, for access, but I see no sense in using small roads, if larger roads have no big penalty attached to them. Here there is no big penalty to using the main routes IMHO.

Good points there Franglais, it’s called a traffic congestion equilibrium, where motorists avoid a congested area to avoid long queues and traffic jams to seek an alternative route to then start another traffic jam.

And throw 2 years of road works at Winhall roundabout while they put trough running lanes off and on the A34 from M3 that’s going to be chaos
