I buy the food to take with me it is irrelevant who prepares my meals, at home or otherwise. I still have to buy it in the first place. If I was to stay at home and eat at home then that is totally different as I wouldn’t be buying extra food to take away. Quite a simple concept really.

But if you eat the home prepared food while on a night out, then you’re not eating the stuff that’s still in the larder back at home - the “home” food bill is reduced by a corresponding amount because you’re not there to eat it. As you say, quite a simple concept really.
I can see the logic of a meal brought to eat at home costs the same as a meal to eat away so why should trampers get a tax free subsidence.
Well part of it is eating away and the limitations of being on ones own or in the cab of a vehicle.
At home anything that doesn’t get eaten or part portions can be frozen for a later date. E.g “I haven’t had chance to get tea tonight darling shall we just raid the freezer or order in.”
Hmm not sure if I’ve opened another smorgus board of worms (pardon the pun) mentioning take aways as surely these are a similar price home or away. But if I order one when away before I book off and chuck the receipt I can get me tax free subsidence.
Hang on where was I, oh yes freezers- theres no doubt in my mind it’s cheaper to eat at home for a week than when away, mainly coz I don’t buy the house shopping but will chip in when at home, not as much as I pay when away though.
But the sheer scope of home storage allows she who must be satisfied to take advantage of special offers and buy stuff I’m unable to, this variety is why trampers should not pay tax on night out money, so there.
But it would have been easier if night out money was taxed from the get go.
On a side note I’ve made £4 today selling receipts…

That’s awfully close to an admission that NOM is really just “being paid (a pittance) to sleep in a tin box instead of in your own bed/with your SO”…

No admission needed, you are away from home and the pittance of night out money is part food and realistically is part of your sufferance money. There won’t be many trampers who would do the job without this additional money. It isn’t so much as to make you go tramping for this alone though, but you do have to buy additional food as well as the odd luxury. My gas for a stove and even the stove itself, etc etc are all needed to be comfortable. My point being that I still have to run a house with bills at home and of course you have additional expenses whilst away, even if you don’t spend the piddling amount of £23.50 per day, you are apart from your family and the £23.50 does not compensate for that. Which ever way you look at it, would you sleep out each night for free. HMRC have introduced the receipt business and I am expressing it can be difficult to obtain and even keep the receipts. It isn’t a fortune but you do consider it a part of your entitlement.
Sounds like there’s a couple on here that are looking for a way out of driving and into a cushy job with HMRC with the way they’re talking.

Please stop - I’m welling up…
If you’re only getting £23.50 your employer is being a bit parsimonious. Current HMRC rules allow you to get £26.20 tax-free if you have a sleeper cab.

No need to well up, £23.50 is enough for me, it isn’t part of my wages and would prefer to work days than to tramp for the extra £94.00. If I were to get the allowance stopped then I would have no problem stopping tramping. I agree with you that the £23.50 is not at the max figure allowable, I work with lads who rely on the extra money, that’s sad and not something to be smirking over, it is a sign of how badly paid we already are, night out money and hideous hours does not equal a good wage, it is a necessity in order to earn a living.
