Newly passed and start my first job next week. Advice needed

Hi everyone.
I passed my test a couple of weeks ago and I start my first job next Wednesday driving a rigid tipper.
I’m a bit nervous to say the least. I’m jumping in with another driver on my first day so he/she can show me what’s what.
Is there any tipper advice you lot could offer me please?
I’ve noticed some tipper drivers lift the back up a few inches when they’re getting loaded. Why do they do that?

Tgey will have an on-board weigher, most, although not all, require the body to be raised a few inches to work. As long as it’s correctly calibrated they are reasonably accurate. The routine is you lift the body and when the weigher on either your dash or on your phone via Bluetooth shows your loaded you sound your horn and the machine driver goes away.

Thanks for that, acd.

Biggest piece of advice for tippers is" look up "when tipping and be aware of overhead power lines and telephone cables and aim to tip on level hard ground.

Thank you, Lilac.

One thing, they told me… I’ve never driven one by the way…,

“Never turn on rough or even ground with a tipper extended upright (raised) or it will fall over onto its side”

… also, one young lad turned left at the lights with such gusto that as soon as he had turned the corner the lorry had parked itself nicely onto the pavement just stopped short of a telegraph pole right on the corner on the traffic light crossroads… not because he cut the corner, he hadn’t, but because it ran away with him during the turn and he just kept turning having gone too fast.

Anyway, he just pulled away back onto the road and went off. There were loads of tippers going back and forth all day, that day. Had that have been a quick parking maneavere it was nicely done but, it wasn’t because he went right up to the telegraph pole and he wouldn’t have parked so close to the corner anyway, I couldn’t figure out if he was empty or full.

how did it go then Leno? are you on quarry work/tarmac?

You normally lift up the back and that activates the load weight monitor. Then you can give the horn a hoot and the loader knows your loaded.if you have an experience machine chap he’ll know when your close enough. The other main point to keep your eye on is do not drop in to the normal rush here and there mode as most tipper trucks do there seems to be some presher to keep up load for load. I never did i drove to suit the road speed or the traffic conditions I’ve been in this game for 50 years and i drive at a safe relaxing pace all ways get the job done .
