one to get the grey matter going larry . in the 90s i did a lot of loads of flour from ranks at rotherham to a haulage company in gateshead , who did ranks local deliveries . they were 1/2 mile from the a167m towards s. shields . always a decent tip , and the drivers were a grand bunch of lads . cheers , dave
Is the “Bellingham” digs still there? Last time I was there was in the sixties so the memory dims.It was not far from the flour mills, just under the bridge. We used to stay there on the way home from the US Base at Edzell. Correct me if I’m wrong-it was a long time ago but it was always a good digs. Regards to you all, 900X20.

Yes we used to do a bit for them as well Ray Myler had the contract his manager was Bill Wallom, great lads to work with, they packed in some years ago, the depot went back to being a garage for repairs as far as I can remember A.Waugh I think it was named. It was a decent return load for us & they would hang back for us if we were running a bit late, Regards Larry

how do you remember these times, the mind boggles
Lawrence Dunbar:
I was along the Quayside today, Spillers being demolished, Jimmys Cafe closed down what a sad site to say the least, If this is progress , they can stuff it for me, what will be put in its place, another eyesore to stand empty because the rents are to high. where will it all end I wonder. Regards Larry ■■■■■■■■ am away ti thi club.
I took these shots a few weeks ago, the demolition has progressed since then. Spillers mill was opened in 1938
and at that time was the tallest concrete grain silo in the world. Another bit of industrial history is fast
disappearing. regards kevmac47.
I rememeber in the 50/60s when the Quayside was heaving, One particular job, tippers running Lime from Prudhoe ICI Works, to the Tyne, FShort Ltd had the job, there was a elavator & ramps so the tippers tipped onto the ship. The tipper men .E Hewitson, Smart & Cardella, Falcon Transport, Spearman. plus many more. One night a ship came up the river towards the Swingbridge,& the surge of water raised the lime ship up, the elevator was tied to it & toppled into the Tyne luckey no one was hurt. Reeds crane arrived plus a couple of divers, they soon had it back on the Quay.caused quite a stir, im sure the ship was the Hudson Bay. Short had a shed on wheels for an office, so it could be moved anywere on the Quay. It ended up at St.Peters depot & was still being used till they moved to Felling.in the 70s.I was along the Quay a while ago & St Peters Basin, Shorties Buildings are still there & in use, even the old time office where we used to clock in any photos about, Happy days Larry.
I preferred the flour mill
Its a shame all of Tyne Mill is coming down, why couldn’t they keep the old part on the left and do something with it as they did with the Baltic, only something not to do with the arty ■■■■■ luvvie world. My Brother who’s a Joiner done a load of work in there only a few years ago, surely they knew it was coming down then, still he done well out of it. Wonder what this old lad thinks of it all ! Cheers Franky.
Nice model Franky, It has a 1950 Carlisle Reg onthis O model is this original ? Great stuff Regards Larry.
Wheel Nut:
I preferred the flour mill
In some ways I do like the sage is great for live music ( although does lack atmosphere but good acoustic ) it promotes live music for all
Also my son got engaged there in may ( proposed to his g/f there ) & yep got down on 1 knee etc

there was an old mill at silvertown east london which was still working in the late 80s I worked for a firm who parked up behind there near the graving dock pub, I was told after it closed that it was a listed building anyone know if its still standing? it was right near georges cafe I don`t get down that way anymore and this talk of mills got me wondering , interesting thread this this sort of thing is happening all over I come from north london and my good lady from bethnal green but with the so called “gentrification” going on and money people moving in its like our history of where we grew up does not exist anymore such a shame well enough moaning night all, fredm
