New Year New Job

All being well I will be starting my 1st driving at the start of February.
Been offer a Job as Recovery Patrol with The AA today after applying a couple of weeks ago.
Just here really to ask for advice on what I should be carrying whilst out in the truck. Will just be doing shifts so no nights out etc. Any help and advise for a newbie out on the road will be appreciated. I have had my licence for almost 4 years and been driving for the Fire Service so happy with the driving part, it’s just what kit I should take with me and remembering to put my drivers card in and press the right buttons on the Tacho machine.

Thanks in advance.

From what I have gathered AA should pretty much have all the kit on the truck ready to go to work, a patrol will have almost always done a roadside beforehand so you don’t get involved in diagnosis or roadside repairs, AFAIK.

You will do lots of drop offs at motorway services so if you wanted you could eat and drink from the facilities, but much better on the waistline and wallet if you go out with as much food and drink that you might need for the day from home.

I dare say the AA will also give you some reasonable waterproofs, once in the routine you shouldn’t need very long outside to winch and strap the vehicle down.

Don’t think I have anything else to suggest, most of my kit bag was basic tools, torches, gaffer tape and cable ties, I’d hope you truck has that if you are likely to need them.

Yeah hopefully all the kit will be there for me. Its more personal stuff I was thinking. Hopefully going to have a meeting with my depot manager next week so will ask him. Guess it will mainly be food, drink and a phone charger that I will need to take with me outside of what The AA will provide.

A head torch to keep your hands free, I always find useful

Been looking at them and also beanie hats with an inbuilt light

Well interesting.

But all the AA recovery trucks I’ve been in with a vehicle on the back can’t think of one driver that had anything good to say about working for them and I’ve been in a few over the years being recovered.

Good luck with it and let us know how you find it.

My guess its all down to individual experiences with the drivers attitude towards the job. The Depot I will be working from only has 2 trucks and 4 drivers so hopefully the trucks will be kept in good condition ad clean. Also its my 1st driving job so I will have nothing to compare it to. Will see how it goes in the new year.

A bottle of washing up liquid mixed aprox 50/50 water/liquid. If your ever winching on or off somthing with locked/ damaged wheels, a quick squirt along the intended path of travel will make you job 10x easier!

Thanks. I was to a mate on Facebook the other day who is due to retire soon from TheAA. he has been there a good 10 years and works out of the depot I will be working from so don’t think its that bad a company to work for.

Got my start date a couple of weeks back  . 2 weeks training starts in the 21st then a few shifts with another driver and once we are both happy I will be out on my own. Cannot wait to get started now
