Just reading through this ,I have had businesses with start up loans and high rents that just killed the passion straight away .In my opinion save up £6k buy a Renault ,See how it goes ,£6 k is nothing of an outlay ,Wack the insurance on tick And use an interest free credit card for the first few months for fuel .What ever you do try to find work first or at least a promise of some .
Good luck

Beetlejuice:
And use an interest free credit card for the first few months for fuel .

In theory that’s a sound idea except that firstly I spent £9,000 on fuel in my first two months trading, and not many folk will have that type of credit limit, and secondly Keyfuels (or whoever) will generally give a considerably better price on fuel than roadside filling stations.

Best advice I’d give re buying fuel is to try to get at least two fuelcard providers as soon as possible, then you can play one against the other.

For a start up new business it’s always risky to invest your capital or tie in long term contracts as you don’t know how business will go. It’s better to keep the capital, hire both trailer and tractor for short term before purchase one. There are companies who do 3 month rolling contracts for tractor units, and trailer hire weekly. Hire for 3 to 6 months, secure a good work and relations, try both containers and curtainsider work, calculate what’s coming in and going out, search a local garage for your future owned unit and agree some type of maintenance contract. When finally decide to purchase one, take your garage mate to check the unit. Our job is to drive/operate and for mechanics, leave it to someone professional. Well, so far this is my plan for my start up as an operator. Hope this can be helpful for others who plan to start soon, and here is the offer for unit hire;

We can offer the following tractor unit hire options:
Renault T Range (Euro 6) 460BHP Auto - £385.00 + VAT Per Week
Renault Premium (Euro 5) 460BHP Auto - £325.00 + VAT Per Week
Services Included: Maintenance/Inspections, RFL and Tyres
Minimum Term: 3 Months Rolling With 30 Day Written Notice For Return
Deposit: One Month In Advance
Unfortunately we do not have availability on Skelly Trailers.

Get a £6000 unit from auction, how much do you plan to pay maintenance for the first 6 months? Those units sold in auctions for reason. There are better premium units 13’plate for around £13000 under 500k.

Thank you. Especially for the rates. As soon as I get approval from the bank I’ll carefully consider ask the options. I don’t think I’m brave enough to buy a unit for £6k as there is a reason why it’s so cheep. Most manufacturers only offer R&M on vehicles up to 7 years old. However they have to had fsh up to date.

There was a post on here couple of months ago 134 5yr old ex Goldstar Premiums maybe heading to auction.
All limited to 52mph and serviced every 6wks no expense spared.

Think they’d be worth a GOOD punt if you know how to “work” the auctions!!![emoji6]

At this time in start very hard to find direct customers so is there any better advise other than start with sub work? Then work hard on building contacts in places where deliveries made.(surely it won’t happen tomorrow)
Give helpful advices for people who want to start their business so badly, or share your knowledge, companies to sub, their rate in 2018, best dealers etc…
As an advice “my old man was earning £500 per day in 1983 with marathan carrying 24 tonne ” won’t help anyone here. In fact, who wants more competitor… better advise not to start… :exclamation:

I didn’t post or advise lend money from bank. To start you have to have minimum 8000£ anyway to show commissioner and if you don’t have more capital let’s say up to 20000£, I would ask myself , am I ready… my answer would be “no”.

For container work, Martello Transport offered the highest rate/mile. Most companies offered around 1.40 empty / loaded. Here’s few;

Martello: £1.50 per mile.
£2280 revenue (5 days)
14 day payment terms. Work week 1, invoice week 2, payment on Friday of week 3 and every week there after.
Would prefer you to use your own skelly and fuel card but can provide both if required.
We’d struggle to run a Manchester based truck day and night at the moment but tramping would be ideal for both parties.
Lots of weekend work available.

Transmode: Average weekly mileage 1600

  • earning per week £2200 £2300
-Payment terms two week after weeks end
-Trailer hire rates / accept own skelly can hire one to you (£90 a week) but prefer you to have your own.
    -Fuel card yes
    -Weekend work availability yes

Portexpress: Average weekly mileage 1700 -1800
-Rates per loaded/empty miles £1.35
-Payment terms Weekly after 3 weeks
-Trailer hire £85.00 but accept sub contractors own skelly
-Fuel card Yes
-Shift work availability (2*12 hr shifts) No
-Weekend work availability Limited

Hope it will be helpful. All the best to anyone who brave enough to take some more responsibility than just driving… :sunglasses:

“Responsibility” would be well down the list,
trying to turn a profit be at the top!!!

For a start up new business it’s always risky to invest your capital or tie in long term contracts as you don’t know how business will go. It’s better to keep the capital, hire both trailer and tractor for short term before purchase one. There are companies who do 3 month rolling contracts for tractor units, and trailer hire weekly. Hire for 3 to 6 months, secure a good work and relations, try both containers and curtainsider work, calculate what’s coming in and going out, search a local garage for your future owned unit and agree some type of maintenance contract. When finally decide to purchase one, take your garage mate to check the unit. Our job is to drive/operate and for mechanics, leave it to someone professional. Well, so far this is my plan for my start up as an operator. Hope this can be helpful for others who plan to start soon, and here is the offer for unit hire;

We can offer the following tractor unit hire options:
Renault T Range (Euro 6) 460BHP Auto - £385.00 + VAT Per Week
Renault Premium (Euro 5) 460BHP Auto - £325.00 + VAT Per Week
Services Included: Maintenance/Inspections, RFL and Tyres
Minimum Term: 3 Months Rolling With 30 Day Written Notice For Return
Deposit: One Month In Advance

The reason they are cheap is because they are so many of them in big fleets and residuals are not great either.
All the more reason to “consider” them as a new start O/D for 1st year anyway.

Would guess your bank will be very TIGHT in lending money for new business based on your figures above!!!

I didn’t post or advise lend money from bank. To start you have to have minimum 8000£ anyway to show commissioner and if you don’t have more capital let’s say up to 20000£, I would ask myself , am I ready… my answer would be “no”.

You don’t NEED to have diddly to show the Commissioner in business bank lad,
Credit card balance of £8k will suffice!!!

We just sold a 6x2 11 plate Premium with a full ticket for 5k , we only paid 8k for it 2 years ago so wasnt a bad price, certainly would have seen a new starter right for the 1st year or so
