HI there, I have been here for 5 years and got into one of the volunteer fire departments here in Crofton BC. A good way to make buddies and hear about jobs too. Duncan has a general hospital and will be getting a mobile MRI scnnaer in the next year. A friends husband works in the AE Dept and he loves it. Are you both British? When did you put the PR papers in?
I have just passed my class one and had driven in the uk for 30 years. There is not a lot of Class1 jobs on the island and they certainly will not take on inexperienced drivers. Even I am having trouble finding work here and may have to go to Alberta to work. Have you thought of working in the oil fields? It’s cold hard work but pays really well, up to 10,000 a month.
Good luck. Also good luck with the application, bring all your insurance details, in paper form, for cheaper car insurance, the last nine years no claims are required for full discount. If I can be of any help you can PM me

I am in the process of moving to Vancouver and would welcome any advice about finding work in BC. I have an active application for PR which should be no problem as my wife is a nurse and we have more than enough points. I passed my class 2 back in May and I am know unsure if it is worth doing class 1 in UK or waiting until I have moved if I will have to retake it anyway. Is there work available as a class 2 driver whilst taking class 1 in BC? Where would be the best place to start researching Canadian driving careers?
Cant help you on the driving job front, but see no point in taking your bendy licence in the UK if your off over to BC soon & have to redo it… Good luck though I think Vancouver is a great place…
Hi new to BC. Just a few notes. Have you decided on where to live. Having been here ten years the life on Vancouver Island is the best. very good hospitals & clinics, and amongst highest rates for drivers. have a look on the Government job board , you will find it on the WWW.BCPNP.GOV.CA web site. there was a job I fancy myself paying $25 an hour as a class 2 fuel tanker driver doing home heating oil deliverys. look up Columbia fuels or North west tank lines. Definatly wait until you get here for your class 1 course, you can drive on a UK licence for 90 days. so you have plenty of time to do it. The one other good thing about the Island is that its the only place in Canada that does not freeze. Its mainly like Bournmouth. We do get one or two weeks of heavy snow, but then thats when all the kids get days of school and everybody moans that why the council was not prepaird !! just like home. Well happy to give you tips.
Cheers JJ.
Thanks for the help guys. I’ve not decided on where to live yet it depends on which hospital the Mrs gets based in. I quite like the look of Nanaimo but the other half thinks there may be more work in Vancouver. Is it going to be a struggle to get work as a driver? Most of the jobs I see advertised want several years experience and experience of mountain driving. Do they use temp agencies in Canada or is most of the work permanent?
As for there being more work on the mainland thats true, but the cost of living is also higher, for example fuel is 10% more in greater Vancouver than on the Island or the rest of BC, thats a city tax, bit like London. Nanaimo has a big hospital, its also a teaching hospital as its part of the Universty. There are no Driver agencys in BC unfortunatly. I have even looked into why not as there could be a nich, but its all to do with Insurance. As for jobs Driving I dont think you would have any problem finding a job. regarding experiance, or lack of it. We all started somewhere!! Take whatever you can its all experiance. Dont expect to get straight on super-B trucks running over the rockies, Take the local dump truck jobs or supermarket delivrys. I live 10 miles north of Nanaimo & can say that living on the island is far better than over in Vancouver. Victoria is the biggest city on the island & there is a big hospital there as well. I would seriously recomend that wherever you think off living, you need to go visit as a glossy broucher is not what it may be like. have you been yet?? if you want some tips , I am happy to pass them on. Have just looked at several jobs, www.nanaimocraigslist/transportation.com
Well good luck. Cheers JJ.
