New average speed cameras on A9

New average speed cameras have been installed on the A9, just outside Perth. As the sections they cover include both dual carriageway and single carriageway I wonder if they are set to just pick cars up exceeding 60mph or, because for us truckers it is 50mph and 40mph respectively how would they know the total speed for the complete section combining the two averages. The mind boggles. Especially as I for one believe reducing speed any more for trucks is actually more dangerous due to impatient drivers following etc

they will be ANPR ones so can tell exactly what vehicle it is and adjust for the laws pertaining to that vehicle

These cameras are crazy, you want to see the tailbacks with more lorrys sticking to NSL’s car drivers are not used to it and get very frustrated as you say roadtoad, am i right in thinking these are still under testing until sep/oct?

Im not sure what the situation is, its very confusing. If they are under “test” does this mean any speeders will be let off or fined ? Also the fact they are average speed cameras but cover a stretch of road where there are two speed limits i.e 40 + 50 single carrigeway then dual carrigeway. What speed are we supposed to drive at. I am tempted to drive all of it at 40mph to be on the safe side. Particularly now they have announced the new higher speeding fines up to £10,000. Its nothing to do with safety where trucks are concerned there were far fewer accidents involving trucks before they started clamping down on the 40mph rule. As you say, other drivers become impatient when they are stuck behind a truck sticking to 40mph and it is this that causes accidents. But its no use trying to change the law because its all about putting revenue in govt coffers. I think its about time we all organised a national drive slowly day in protest. That would throw a spanner in the works.

  1. If there are signs up saying the cameras are for testing only you won’t get fined for speeding.

  2. You are supposed to drive no faster than the legal speed limit for the stretch of road, 50mph for duel-carriageway and 40mph for single-carriageway roads.

The fact that there are speed cameras there doesn’t alter the speed limit

If there are only two average speed cameras covering both speed limits I imagine they calculate the fastest time you could legally cover the distance and fine you if you cover the distance faster, but I could be wrong

They now have signs up saying that the cameras are not in use.
Supposedly, the speed limit for HGVs is being raised to 50mph on s/c sections when the cameras go live in October or November, but only between Perth and Inverness. So,just set the cruise control to 50.
I was done in 2012 and 2013 for speeding on the A9.I e-mailed the A9 safety partnership two weeks ago, asking them if they would reimburse my money and remove my penalty points as there have been no improvements to the road as yet(supposed to be all dual carriageway by 2025-yeah,right),yet they are increasing the speed limit :unamused: :unamused: Also asked them why they consider it safe for a truck of up to 44 tonnes in weight to travel at 50 from the end of this year but it hasn’t been in the past.No response so far, surprise surprise.

Do you have a link to an article that says the speed limit is to be increased to 50mph on sections of single carriageway ?

The reason I ask is because national speed limits are set out in the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and I don’t think the speed limits could be increased without a change in the law, without converting the road to duel carriageway I’m pretty sure it simply would not be legal to increase the speed limit to 50mph.

I’ll wait to be corrected though

The signs stating that the cameras are under test have been removed and replaced by VMSs stating that the cameras are not in use,yet 2 weeks ago it was reported that since the installation of the cameras the number of speeding vehicles had reduced from 1 in 3 to 1 in 10.So obviously they are having the desired effect but by telling you they are not working yet they want drivers to carry on speeding so they can swell the coffers.Or am I being cynical?
As you say,very confusing.
