Hi Guys
I have just had my desktop tower renewed
But in a family of 5 everyone is on it
My 2 girls and my mrs want a netbook each (me and the boy will share the desktop)
we are looking at spending £250-275 each
I’ve heard the 1GB versions are painfully slow with the lack of memory, could you use an external hard drive?
I have seen a 2GB with windows 7 around this price range
any ideas?
The 1gb are ok if your just surfing webpages. if you wanna do anything like movies or music or games it will be way to slow
I’ve got a Dell Mini 9 and it’s quite small, a bit too small actually. It has 8GB HDD on board, 1.6Ghz processor and 1GB of RAM, the latter can be doubled by changing the memory card.
It’s got a 9" screen which is really a bit on the small size so I would recommend a 10 - 12" size thing for most people, and get some decent ram in it. The latest Dell Minis only take 1GB of ram, a bit of a downgrade really.
If I had the money I’d end up with something closer to the Thinkpad X60 size but that’s just me. Good Luck
If you get the chance try and have a play on the device before you get it. PC world/currys usually have a good lineup to try
Here’s an idea, forget about the net-book, unless you need the small size, and get yourself a 14" or bigger laptop similar to this

or i just found this bargain

For about the same price, you have a decent size screen with bigger memory and a much bigger hard-drive, DVD/CD player and longer battery life.
I made the mistake of buying a 10" net-book and would never recommend one to anybody
My biggest problem is the small size screen which hurts the eyes after a while, if you want to know what it’s like i suggest sticking a piece of cardboard with a 5" x 8" hole in it to your desktop screen and use it for a few days.
I’d go for a 10" netbook with a gig of ram. Be sure to get one with the N570 1.66 duel core atom. I have a Samsung like this. Wiped the hard drive as soon as I got it out of the box and installed Fedora. After a bit of fiddling with the drivers I got the wireless, webcam and bluetooth support. I also got mp3 playback sorted .
