Beer delivery truck (or horse drawn cart).

Hi “Danny_b” ,
The definition of a Dray , from the Collins English Dictionary , is :-

" A low cart used for carrying heavy loads" .

The same word is often referred to a brewery trade delivery vehicle .

Choose whichever meaning of the word you prefer .

Cheers , cattle wagon man.

Thanks guys, next question what is the specific dray training? Would it be how to man handle kegs?

yep loading -unloading kegs crates the whole lot some places still use cellars so the use of the mat when dropping kegs off the side of the dray .

Sorry I can`t help with your second question.

I do know that full beer kegs are heavy , -but much lighter than the larger ones from 35 years ago when
I occasionally helped-out at pre-Easter/Bank Holiday rush orders. A smaller delivery vehicle was a benefit.
Some older pubs had quaint steps to descend ,…but the owners/landlords were more forthcoming
with a rewarding drink. Tough luck on the driver. :frowning: :frowning:

Cheers (hic !) , cattle wagon man.

The training for dray is learning how to move the kegs about, on and off the truck and into cellars without hurting yourself, I did it for a little while for a small brewery, we used barge rope, its made of hemp and similar to climbing ropes at school and sacks filled with a hard rubber or dense foam, can’t afford to pull your back every week. I am surprised that some H&S tossers have not said that a hoist should be used, like I said - tossers.

■■■■ the boys from tennents and wallace express just throw the kegs about, they walk it to the edge of the bed and drop it onto big rubber cushion (for want of a better description) my wife is a bar manageress and I help her tiny ■■■ in with the new kegs on delivery days. She’ll be ■■■■■■ once I get a full time job

I’m doing dray work at the moment, once you get the hang of handeling the kegs it’s easy enough. Who’s advertising for drivers?

Dray training is normally a manual handling and kinetics course lasting from one to three days that used to be carried out in house by the majority of breweries. They teach you the how to identify kegs and casks and how to move the products from the vehicle to the cellars.
For this you may need sack trucks and ropes or even hoists that you fit on the rear of the vehicle. Its not difficult to pick up as long as you keep your witts about you.
