Necton Diner, A47

On Saturday (while not trucking), I decided to pull in at the Necton Diner on the A47 to Gt Yarmouth with my Mrs. It is a truckers diner really, so as expected is not all gleaming chrome and polished glass (lol).

We both had a half pound cheese burger with salad, I had a mug of coffee and she who must be obeyed had a mug of Tea. Both the tea and coffee were great, and the burgers were too (she didn’t manage to finish hers because of the size).

The loos were clean and well looked after. I spoke to the owner as I wanted to find out what he provided for truckers and he said “Truckers are my bread and butter and I look after them”. It turns out that he is a chef, and as well as the diner providing burgers and such, he also does traditional english meals such as steak & kidney pie etc with fresh veg. He gave me the following details…

Overnight parking £10. Includes: £5.25 food allowance, showers, Bar, TV Lounge, pool table and a couple of fruit machines. He seemed a very nice chap - and certainly one who wishes to treat truckers well. He took over during the Summer (June?) from someone who apparently did not feel quite the same about truckers ( :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: ) so if you’re out that way, give him a try. 01760-724180, have a decent meal and rest and cheer him on.

Cheers

John

Good info John, cheers!

good one … did he give you free tea for the publicty.

I have’nt been in for about 6 years, but from what you report it may be worth a look.

where about is the necton cafe . when you say on the way to gt yarmouth is it between Norwich and Yarmouth ? always find good sitdown cafes a bit thin on the ground in norfolk.

from transportcafe.co.uk

A47… between Norwich and Kings Lynn Sat Navigation 52:39:28N, 0:45:20E Necton Diner previously called The Hungry Horse.

Travelling from Norwich on A47 you would pass Dereham on the A47, continue on A47 then pass through Little Fransham, continue on A47 approximately 1.5 miles until Necton. The stop is located on the left side of the road. Travelling from Kings Lynn direction on the A47 then you would pass Swaffham on the A47, continue approximately 2 miles till you get to Necton. Located on right. The cafe is joined to the Chipshop. … Both run by same management… T

Hi John…

Good information

A few years back, when it was the Hungry Horse, Necton was always a good place to stop and the food was great. It then became a chippy, with a new owner, and things changed for the worse.

I’m pleased its back to its old self again

(The showers must be new)

Sounds brilliant John, and certainly if I am that way at the right time of day I’ll give it a go, but why oh why are the English so obsessed with ripping off truckers and owners with ‘Overnight parking £10. Includes: £5.25 food allowance’ ?

By all means deter the bludgers who park up and eat in the cab but there is no reason why someone who pays for a meal, possibly two with breakfast should be faced with a parking charge.

I know I am spoilt by living and operating in France for so long but there is no way I would pay for parking, when running to England I always found somewhere away from the clamp-bandits.

Salut, David.

Hi all,

no I didn’t get a free cup of tea - I didn’t speak to the guy until AFTER we had eaten etc, so that way the service wasn’t biased at all.

Just to point out, I saw the loos but didn’t see the showers so can’t comment on the condition.

Spardo, here you have to pay for parking virtually everywhere, so you could look at it as £4.75 parking plus buy a meal! Either way, it is nice to see a proper diner instead of a rip-off MSA.

Cheers all and please let me know what you think if you do visit it.

PS - forgot to say, that little lot was only £6.20 - compare that with an MSA :open_mouth:

.

I know that John, that was the point of my post - why - if not purely as a jump-on-the-bandwagon rip-off? They don’t need to if the food is any good. The French have proved that.
Many French routier restos have enough money left over from charging reasonable amounts for food to employ someone to supervise pretty parking, to make sure there is room for everyone.

Salut, David.

whats wrong with msa
i stopped at southwaite services the other week for just 9 hrs and it cost me £9 what a bargin and there was no shower either {south bound}
msa are theiving parasites. avoid

im in norfolk tomorrow so i may give it ago on my way back home cheers

Good luck Shaun, tell him the chap on Saturday recommended it on the boards - and let us know what you think - a 2nd opinion has got to be worthwile.

Cheers

mmmmmmmmm brekky was ok

Good Shaun, glad for ya! Did you speak to the ‘man’? What did you think of the diner?

Thanks for the info, will see how far out of Norwich it is. Tankie’s in a small artic right now heading to Norwich from Stoke-on-Trent and needs a good place to park up tonight.

Anyone have any idea how much parking space there is, for how many trucks (like a DAF LF55 with trailer)

Hi Katie,

the chap told me he had 22 trucks in one night. There is a reasonable amount of space.

John

Thanks for the info, John, Tankie found it ok around 7:15pm but it was shut, although plenty of parking spaces, and on investigation so was the pub in Necton village. Does Norfolk do early closing?
