National Express coaches,do you give way!

I got talking to a national express coach driver the other day,and he told me their schedules are pretty tight, and sometimes, people are in a hurry to get to the airport in time, now, you know what Im going to say next!,he gets stuck behind a truck overtaking at 1mph more than the one in front. He cant use the outside lane.
From now on,I always keep the left lane until they get past.
Do you let them past…

No, the rules only work if we all follow them. If the schedule is to tight then take it up with pointy shoes.

Like any driver who tries to live up to the term hgv professional, one should judge varying traffic situations constantly and try to make the best smooth progress you can without impeding others.
No i don’t hold a coach up if there’s an alternative, its not as if they suddenly beam down from the sky you can see them approaching, they may not always reciprocate courtesy but thats their loss if they aren’t competent professionals, no doubt there’s as many car drivers behind the wheels of buses as there are car driver behind the wheels of trucks.

Didn’t need to be told this by a disgruntled coach driver, its something i’ve always tried to do, accommodate other roads users whether on foot on bicycle or in whatever vehicle they might be…remember we the driver of the truck are supposed to be the professional here, it says so at the top of this page.

As a professional driver, if someone is struggling to overtake me I always knock off 3mph so that they can pass in a timely manner.

National Express drivers always have right of way. Their coaches do 100km/h, trucks 90km/h.

It’s in the highway code.

If someone wants to get pass, you help them and not hinder them.

Trucks are large, but you’re not supposed to be a rolling obstacle.

Yes why wouldn’t you, I even back off for high and mighty artic drivers because I’m not four years old.

Yes I’m awarethat I’m slowing down 30+ people for no real benefit of mine really so I don’t overtake if I’m about to be overtaken by a coach unless the one in front of me is really slow and I know it’s going to be a quick overtake

I did some National Express work many moons ago.My thoughts were that their timetables were made by a guy on a motorbike at 2 am.I tried to set off on time, after that it was how the day went how close to time i was.In much the same way as every delivery for trucks MUST be there at 8 am.

Why should they get any special treatment? If their schedule is so tight that’s their tuff ■■■■.

All traffic is treated the same, I cruise around at 51mph & when i come up behind another slower moving vehicle i smash past it at 56. Simple, no stress & unless someone’s playing silly buggers in the left lane it doesn’t take more than 30sec to get past.

I think they should get special treatment because they are carrying people,we are only carrying freight. But its good that you knock it up to 56 ,cant fault you for that

I had already figured out for myself that anyone towing but not speed limited, as well as coaches, are not allowed to use the outside lane and I try not to hold them up.

I’ve always found coach drivers to be the most enthusiastic to be flashed back in (even though the speed differential means they don’t need it) so it’s worth it for the amusement.

This begs the question: why can coaches do 60 and lorries only 56? Wouldn’t it be better, if like the old days, everyone had the same limit?

I’ll postpone an overtake,if a bus is coming down the second lane.

This ^^^ I do a strange thing when I’m driving, I’m sure that all of us here do it, but it appears that the wider trucking community doesn’t, and that is I ease off the throttle until there is a suitable gap I can get into where I’m going to minimise any disruption to other road users.

Yep.
“Drive for the road” is what I was taught.

Bet you’re a right social magnet if all you can muster after a few is a thought about coaches and lorries :unamused:
