Congratulations!

JPMidlands:
Hi all,
iv been looking over this forum for a few months now eagerly awaiting my chance to get behind the drivers seat and start trucking.
I was 18 yesterday so went out with my “L” plates on and enjoyed every second of it
then today I have passed my HGV multiple choice with 87 out of 100 (pass mark is 85), and passed my HGV hazard perception test with 75 out of 100 (pass mark is 67) which I am pleased about.
Tomorrow I have my writing part of the Initial CPC and also waiting on booking my training and test ASAP.

hope to see you all out on the road soon !!
(mind you dont drive behind me as ill be driving an Animal By-products Lorry ;D)

Cheers

Hi all, just thought i should share a bit of my experience of my first week of driving…
i loved it !!
1st day as a driver i was given the new 7.5 tonner in the fleet to tip at Rugeley and then collect fallen stock from various farms. (early 5 am start :grimacing: )

Then on day two my experience in trucking jumped up a gear. I started off at a collection at a pie factory in wellingborough and all was fine until about 2 mile before reaching the plant i had my first smash !! it was a real eye opener to how hard it is to stop one of these monsters and I quickly realised that it isnt as easy as everybody thinks. luckily no one was hurt and the boss wasnt too happy but as he said " these things happen" anyway i carried on my collection and returned to the yard to repair the damage.

the rest of the week I was back on cow and fallen stock collection in the old 6.2 tonne truck

Glad you got some work.

Shame you had the bump. Just out it down to experience and take it easier. My guess is the boss was probably nagging you to get up the road and you took it to heart.

Be safe.

I suspect a lot of your day will be spent on minor roads ,single track back lanes etc to access farms . The locals (well a good few)dont tend to hang around on these . So keep your speed down so you can stop in the distance you can see

In a few weeks/months the gaffer will hopefully have forgoten about the bump and you get to drive the big truck again :smiling_imp:

cheers Mike

yes on farm collections it is. The Gaffer is my uncle so he just had a bit of a moan, then took the mickey for a day or two but he was sending me out in the bigger wagons last week anyways just told me to slow down abit and learn from the experience.

last week I was in our best looking truck (in my opinion as it’s not scraped or battered lol) collecting waste from hunt kennels down in devon then a few worcester farms and then tipped at Stoke. heres a pic of the truck waiting to tip : ( sorry its really dirty if it were mine full time it would be sparkling clean as I hate dirty lorries :imp: )

Cheers

Hi again… Bit of a step up from my class C now as I’m now currently taking my C+E this week and Monday and my test is booked for Tuesday but thought I would keep an update on this diary. I’m going with Peter Smythe Transport Training Ltd for this test.

Day 1 - Turned up at the yard about an hour early lol ( left some time in case I got stuck on the M1 this morning so had. Chill out before I started my training. Anyway wondered up to the office up the stairs to book in and after a short wait I met my instructor Roy.
So we got straight down to the truck which is an iveco 10 Tonne wag and drag setup.
He explained the show me tell me questions and then we we to out for a quick drive so I could see how it was done, after a short while he swapped with me and let me take over the wheel and I loved it. Anyway after doing a good few hours of driving we got back into the yard and Roy told me he was happy with how I drove but I needed to improve on my gearing, indicators on roundabouts and my left hand turns as I swing out a bit too wide. Never mind lets see what tomorrow brings

Cheers

JP

A good choice of trainer .

A great start to the training. Keep us up to date and good luck.

Day 2 - Got there at 2:30 and got straight into the truck with Roy, we practised the reversing exercise a few times and apart from ending up a little un-parallel  but other than that i was ok , then we moved onto coupling and un-coupling and i was ok at that so we went out onto the road for a few house and i was alot better today i thought as i was relaxed and drove smother than yesterday but still only a few little mistakes to polish out before tuesday, Roy told me he was happy with the way i was driving and that we just needed to polish up my driving to make sure i can pass the test so im really happy with how today went, lets see what tommorow brings…

Cheers

JP

Good luck with it all. Don’t take any chances with anything. If you aint sure on something then just ask. Somebody will always put you right…

sorry about the day but hers the last two days of training:

Day 3 - arrived at the yard and after a few reversing exercises and coupling/ uncoupling a few times Roy took me around another route that the tester might take me on which included the M5 and i thought i made a few stupid mistakes as i wasn’t concentrating properly (mounted the curb with the trailer twice) but looking forward to Mondays training to see if i can improve…

Day 4 - Turned up at the training base and a quick chat with Peter himself ( telling me to update this diary LOL )I was out on the road learning another route and im glad to say i did alot better than i did on friday, and after a few practices of reversing and the coupling/uncoupling exercise i feel a lot better about the Test day tomorrow.

Will let you know how i get on tommorow but wish me luck…

Cheers

JP

M5? M1 I reckon..

Unless Peter has moved his base

Best of luck with the test

haha yes sorry, my mistake its the M1 not the M5.

mind was drifting while writing it, and thanks

Test results are in … - I failed :frowning:

2 serious marks and 4 minors.

1S - Forgot to open the pin up before recoupling the trailer up
2S - Couldn’t get the lorry into gear whilst coming up to a junction

1M - Hesitation on roundabout
2M - Hesitation on roundabout
3M - Hesitation on roundabout
4M - Hesitation on roundabout

but trying to book myself back in for test as I think it was just nerves, and get myself back into the driving seat.

Cheers

JP

It took me a couple of attempts. Nerves got me the first time. Then silly mistakes.

Best of luck for retest.

Gutted for you. Better luck next time. Pete

just to let you all know, if finally passed my c+e test and would just like to thank all who helped me along the way including Peter Smythe Transport Training (absolutely brilliant training company and cant fault them) and CRH Transport Training who managed to squeeze me in for a test this week.

hope to see you all out on the road in a bigger truck soon

Cheers

JP
