Music you may not have heard

Defo not my kinda music but the chap on the left is a my son in law, a retired firefighter with a passion for guitars including making and repairing them a life long hobby, we had a visit couple of weeks ago when he and my daughter were “home” for a visit. Our music tastes differ but we agree on most everything else, a decent bloke.

Ever heard of Toni Childs? I hope the videos work.

Here’s a track from the Dutch rock band
Focus…

This track is perfect for going on the limiter over Thelwall viaduct, in a very strong wind pulling an empty curtainsider, …Sunglasses on, volume turned up just below the ‘pain barrier’ whilst giving out a manic horror film style laugh as you are chucked about in the gale…

No?..
Ok just ME then.:joy:

The guy who wrote this Jan Akkerman I think he was called, must have wrote it in an Amsterdam ‘coffee house’ and the fumes got the better of him, when you hear how he ‘Goes off on one’ half way through the track…around 2 minutes.

Stick with it, it will grow on you.

I lurrrve this track, have a listen, get into it .:sunglasses:
It’s bit of vintage …Cloggy Rock.
Enjoy.

(Jeez I went back into DJ ROB mode there for a minute .)

Or another track as a soundtrack to flying over Thelwall in a gale in a stark raving mad maniacal stylee.

A bit more contemporary track this time a bit of Sash.:sunglasses:
Remember full volume pumped up.

So here’s a bit of ‘Franco Electro Techno’.

Get out yer trance.
If ya wanna dance.
Now’s yer chance.
‘Encore une fois’
Mange tout Rodney.
Shabba.
:joy:

There I go again.
This DJ ing lark was purely playing records (showing me age there ) and talking b/s…In a nutshell.:joy:

But the laydeeeez loved it.:sunglasses::grin:

How tf did I end up driving trucks.

I had never heard this until a few seconds of it were featured in the 1st episode of the new Shetland series.

His yodelling would put Frank Ifield to shame.

JG Windows music store in Newcastle ‘closes permanently’ - BBC NewsJG Windows music store in Newcastle ‘closes permanently’ - BBC News

Little bit off track but JG Windows in Newcastle has closed with immediate effect, They have been selling all types of instruments, sheet music, records, cd’s etc since 1908. Bit of an institution in the NE. If Widows did not have it, either they would get it for you or it did not exist.
Remember going in one Saturday afternoon in about 1963 and The Animals were in the basement having a jamming session and trying some new guitars at the same time.

Ronnie Milsap
Button off my shirt.

But I prefer Paul Carracks version more myself.

Both versions released in 1988 months apart by all accounts. Yet it sounds familiar but when I came across it the other day by Paul Carrack I thought it must be a relatively newish song. How wrong was I that it’s been around since the late 80’s yet I don’t seem to have ever heard it before.

Reminds me of this

Yep Ace, Squeeze, Mike and the mechanics and his solo career not to mention his session musician stuff with just about everyone and anybody.

A fantastic artist and I’ve seen him live 3 times and he is just phenomenal.

I haven’t listened to any Kasey Chambers for a while but she was the artist 15 or so years ago that took me across to Country and Folk.

Re watching a few of her live songs on youtube this popped up, quite something, the second half the band kick in and Kasey lets rip.

I worried briefly that I had missed her in the Uk recently, but it’s Newcastle AU.

Here’s a bit of ‘Dad Rock’, early and vintage Status Quo, ‘In my chair’, in the days when they were a cool band,.and when you were considered cool if you liked them.

I remember me and a couple of mates, late 70s going to Rhyl in a mini,.camping in a makeshift tent…that was actually a sail off one of the lad’s Uncle’s boat.:joy:… waking up at least 2 nights soaking wet and all piling in the Mini to sleep.:joy:
We had a Status Quo cassette playing all week, and we all bought a pair of jeans each made entirely out of denim patches…Status Quo style, and denim waistcoats with a white shirt.
Anyhoo I digress.

Have a listen to this track from 1970.

Here’s my all time favourite Quo track that you rarely hear…‘Roll over Lay down’…
Takes me back to dinner times in the pub at Tech Co11ege, on the juke box on a loop, tgen all going back to Tech ■■■■■■ chewing on extra strong mints to kill the alchohol smell…it didnt btw.
Good old days.
So…
‘Roll over Lay down’ :sunglasses:
Dont think the jeans will fit me anymore,.and I aint got the long hair on my shoulders now to do the ‘Head Bang’.:joy:
When I watch this vid,.I’d forgot just how good an old rock band they actually were.
I will guarantee you will find yourself stamping your foot to beat.

Why is the word co11ege censored ffs?

Wot you mean Willis? Status Quo is still a cool band.

Nah…they did lose their way a bit…around the time they put stuff out like ‘Margarita Time’…
That was the reason Alan Lancaster left, he did not like the direction they were going in musically.
4 words ‘‘In the Army now’’…kinda proves the point really.
I loved the early stuff.
Like this for instance.
The intro especially is class…with ‘The Mad Turk’ beating out the drums.

Tbh mate they got to the stage where not only were they uncool, but bordered on being a bit of a joke.

It isn’t.
College, college,

I was talking about their older stuff, I’d never heard the one you just put up. Agree, they went downhill.

The bane of truck drivers, worldwide.

Yep they sold out to commercialism rather than continue making their own unique trademark style rock tracks, which was a shame.

A bit like Genesis did in fact.
My mate was well into their early contemporary ‘weird stuff’ with Peter Gabriel as lead singer.
I never got it tbh.
I actually preferred the more commercial stuff…and they unlike Quo, became more popular and succesful because of it when Phil Collins took over.

‘Abacab’ my favourite Genesis track of all time…

Often wondered how the hell Collins manages to be lead singer, remember all the words, and maintain a set drum beat sequence…all at the same time.
He must drum on ‘autopilot’ without thinking about it…a bit like I drive in fact…and sing along to stuff like this.:joy:
:joy:

What about a bit of ‘WAR’ by the late Edwin Starr.

Speaking of ‘war’, a different genre this time…A bit of ‘War Pigs’ by Black Sabbath, with Tony Iommi’s haunting guitarist skills.

Or another old style ‘Contrmporary rock’ band who like Genesis dabbled with commercialism, and when they did got a no.1 with ‘Another brick in the wall’…Pink Floyd.
Here’s my favourite Floyd track…‘Meddle’.
If you listen carefully at one point you can hear drummer Nick Mason’s Ferrari Dino…I kid you not.
My mind is full of totally useless information on all this kind of stuff.:joy:

Last one for today of …‘Rob reminisces his old music’ . :joy:
