A few weeks ago I learned that the Play “A Night with Janis Joplin” was coming to London for a short run. As a fan I knew I couldn’t miss this probable once in a lifetime opportunity. Nervously I asked my wife if she would come too? “definitely not you know I can’t stand her screeching”, My son? " No thanks dad, even if you are paying". "
Oh well I’ll suppose I’ll have to go on my own then". To which my wife reluctantly replied that as it was a trip to London she’d not miss out on that.
We went last night to the Peacock Theatre off Kingsway. WOW just WOW, brilliant; Mary Bridget Davis IS Joplin reincarnate: voice ,look, manerisms. And my wife? she loved it! beaming, clapping, laughing along with much of the rest of the audience who were often on their feet. The supporting cast portraying: Odetta, Aretha Franklin, Bessie Smith, Etta James and Nina Simone were, like the band, superb.
If you get a chance go and see it. It’s only on until the 28th of this month unfortunately.
Here’s the real Janis, who died 4th October 1970, giving it her all as it always was.
Right lets kick it off with a bit of …DAD Rock.
The great Rod Argent, and his band called would ya believe …‘Argent’.
Back to the 70s with…'Hold your head up!
.
Ok what about a band who everybody thought were from the US cos of their name, but who were actually Brits…
Blackfoot Sue, who are… ‘Standing in the road’
This vid is not dated at all…much.
And to finish off a bit of BTO Bachman Turner Overdrive, Smashy & Nicey’s fave track (who both did a lot of work for chariteee)
‘‘Nothing yet, you aint been around, gotta go to school’’
I haven’t seen the show, but thanks for excuse to hear Janis again.
When that Mercedes advert was about with Janis singing, I joined in with it, (not a pleasant sound I confess) to the shock of the younger members of the family.
Just the same when “Lady Marmalade” charted on the back of the “Moulin Rouge” film.
Cue Patti Labelle and the Blue Belles:
Lady Marmalade, yep I remember playing that
I prefer this version much better though
Not because of the musical production…, but because I am totally shallow.
‘Voulez vouz coucher avec moi…ce soir’
Gitchie gitchie ya ya here’
You bet,… just form an orderly queue ladeeez’.
Hi Robroy. You may know I spend part of my life in Spain.Nowhere near enough as it happens but that is a different story.AC/DC were on at Seville football stadium on june 1st.I drove the 400 miles or so there to see them.Absolutely brilliant. What a great night.
Bobby McGee is the track always played on the radio, with the full tilt rock- mama belting out the Blues being the popular image of Joplin held in the memory, but this is a calmer and somewhat emotional Janis, who as a teenager had been laughed out of the State as “the ugliest man on campus”, essentially singing about herself.
