Spardo, did you ever get to Old Cork Station, south of The 'Curry?
A change of pace.

How about some Acca Dacca?

I thought we were after lesser known music?
I’m pleased to say I saw them at a smallish Newcastle venue (The Mayfair) three times in the late 70’s, with their best frontman, Bon Scott. Soooooooooooo much better than the Brian Johnson fronted lineup
Also pleased I saw INXS at Newcastle City Hall just before they became a “stadium” band and Michael Hutchence hooked up with Mrs Geldorf. They stopped the show temporarily when a couple of inebriates started a bit of a scrap at the back of the hall. “Hey man, stop that, fighting’s not cool, we’re not playing until you stop…”
A tad too woke for 1987 Tyneside, though I don’t think Michael could decipher that message from the punter who shouted “How man it’s the toon y’knarr! gerron wi’it!”
Bloody ruffians, the lot of ya.
I had no idea they were that big, overseas.
A couple of non Aussies, neither topped the charts here, but I liked them.
It’s an epithet the locals would revel in On the plus side we don’t have the same level of knife or gun crime as other major cities. And the girls wear very little clothing, even in the depths of winter
Ironically, despite the “rough and ready” reputation of The Toon, and the fact that posh southerners believe “The North” is a desolate barren wasteland that fracking would improve (Lord Howell, I’m looking at you…), when the Royal Shakespeare Company goes on tour, Newcastle Theatre Royal is always a guaranteed destination.
Some of the fairer s ex.
I don’t know if Colleen made it to your shores, but she was Queen of Pop here, before a successful career in film, stage and TV.
I reckon Helen would have at least gotten air-play there, right?
Yes, that Helen Reddy song is known worldwide
I also remember Split Enz (NZ obviously, and precursor to Crowded House) as well as Midnight Oil. Jimmy Barnes was one of yours who was known internationally. Nick Cave too, though I never got into his stuff. Air Supply, though to me they were just a one hit wonder.
Special mention goes to Skippy, I recently had my 16 year old teaching himself how to do “the Skippy call” with a blade of grass
Oh, er… and thanks a bunch for Kylie
My Dad was almost one of the Ten Pound Poms, I’ve often wondered how that would have worked out
Kylie who?
Barnesy was actually one of yours, but then again at a wild guess, so are about 75% of “our” stars. We’re quick to claim them and even quicker to hand them back when they stuff up.
Barnesy fronted a band called Cold Chisel, until they gave him the flick for being ‘up himself’ and excessive drinking.
He went back to the band and they still get back together for live performances. The band never suffered for his absence, he was a very loud shouter, rather than a vocalist.
All I can tell you is the few words at the start of the song that I remember:
Road Trains rolling down the track where the drovers used to drive,
Churning up the bulldust as they turn the miles aside
Like a rolling reptile, long and high and wide,
Road Trains rolling down the track where the drovers used to ride.
All my LPs are a bit buried at the moment I’ll try and dig them out when I have the time, I also have an LP of various artists singing bush ballads. I know that came with a sheet with all the words, but I seem to remember that got lost along the way.
@zac_a Jenny Agutter, now you’re talking, who could forget her totally totally swimming in a billabong with Aboriginal actor David Gulpilil(?) ?
Spardo, did you ever get to Old Cork Station, south of The 'Curry?
No, never made the connection between QLD and NT. My wanderings took me in a big Uie from Darwin via Melbourne to Sydney and all points north to Townsville and back again.
To get back to Slim Dusty, most people of the right age in UK will only remember him for his number one hit there ‘The Pub With No Beer’.in 1957 but I am a little surprised that he lasted until 2003 when he died of cancer.
David Gulpilil died in 2021.
He also played (amongst other roles) Nev the “city boy” Aborigine in Crocodile Dundee.
I can remember Rolf Harris regularly doing 2 little boys with his digeri doo.
Also rumours of him tying a kangaroo down.
Whatever happened to him ?
Thanks for that, I nearly got the words right, and as for JA, I just shudder at the memory.
I’m an anything but posh Suvverner but the description of the barren Norvern wasteland is in large part justified.Even Norf v Saf Lincolnshire where I partly originated.
Touchy subject I know, however I remember Rolf Harris doing “Jake the Peg, with the extra leg” on black & white telly, Quite amusing at the time.
So just exactly how far north have you been then?? Think I may regret asking this!!
He got a striped suntan.
