Here is a photo of a Mullan Brothers of Chesterfield lorry.
I am one of the late Peter Mullan’s grandchildren.
This is one of a number of photographs found in the belongings of his (2nd) wife Joyce who passed away last year (2013) and I regret that we do not know the dates or locations of them.
I will upload the rest of the pictures as soon as I can.
Going by the brand new look of this Foden, the J-reg plate and the sunny weather this pic is summer 1970. Location, unkown.
Mullan Brothers went bust around the time of the Miners Strike, as did many businesses in that tough period. A similar fate befell The Old House hotel/bar in Newbold which was Peter Mullan’s (it is now owned by the brewery).
What a super looking trailer ,with a single ram it wouldn’t look out of place today ,I presume its a straight frame ? When did that (Wilcox / York /seadyke ) design start ?my Grandad and great Uncle did coal for mullens to carrington .
Before I left school in 1968 I worked part time at the petrol station on the right at the top of Taddington bypass, I would see Mullans, Sid Cooke, and many others go past daily. Some would stop with the agency car for diesel. We would have to check the banned list before we served them
Welcome to the forum Pip and thanks for the photo. Looking forward to seeing others. as I’ve written before I knew your grandfather Peter, one of the old school, and very helpful. I can picture him now sitting on his stool at the bar at the Old House when I used to go in there for a bit of lunch.

Even the Spear and Jackson hanging on the front nearside looks the same as today Dan! An impressive looking outfit, I wonder how long it remained in that condition? Must be one of the last with the S36 cab as our K registrations had the S39 fitted, unless of course Fodens continued to supply both types at the same time. Looks as though the cab is lined out at the rear though, a lot of that type were just bare fibreglass. Saved weight!
Peter Mullan was always very proud of having been in the haulage business.
Even today some 20 years after his passing and 30 years since Mullan Brothers ceased trading people still tell me that they remember the lorries going “over the tops” and all around.
Actually I think I am overstating the case by calling it a “collection” ! As you can imagine it’s a mix of photos from different (unknown) dates and locations , most taken as snaps rather than professionally.
Showing a line up of Mullan Brothers Ltd. of Chesterfield. Date and location unknown. It looks very similar in composition to the 1970ish new Foden previously posted (a full 6’x4’ print), but this one seems to be a little polariod so may be a different date/location.
Here is a photo of a couple of Mullan Brothers’ staff - both look cheerful chaps !
The fellow standing in the boiler suit appears in another photo that I will scan in as soon as possible. I do not know their names.
I have no idea of the make/model of the truck, it seems to be hitched to a low-loader rather than a coal/coke trailer. Mullan Brothers did plant hire and civil engineering work as well as the coal business, so perhaps it was used for that.
Thank you for the address Pip, will have to look it up. The truck is a Foden fitted with the S40 Motor Panels steel cab, it was a similar cab to the ones fitted to the Scammell Crusader, Guy Big J, Seddon and a few other makes. Motor Panels supplied the shell and then it was modified by the individual truck makers, Foden normally produced all their own cabs but this was a departure for them. Good pics, keep them coming!
