Good afternoon to you all,
Looking at the “Trucks” series of books by Pat Kennett, in particular, the one dedicated to Scammeel last night, I noticed a picture of Scammell S26 (Roadtrain high-datum cab) tractor units badged as MOUNTAINEER. The name was put across where the Scammell name was written large below the windscreen. The caption saying these vehicles were going to North America.
Does anyone know if:-
- they did go to North America
- what happened to them?
Thank you in advance to all those Scammell fans who will enlighten us!!!
I have tried to find about these! maybe the late Pat Kennet was the only one who knew the full details,(around 1985/86 iirc)all I know is that they were a T45 cabbed 6x4 unit ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ engine, gearbox, axle combination(all well accepted in the US)they had modified brakes & electricals (12v with 24v start system?) a narrow front axle all to comply with US DOT regs the importer was WVI of West Virginia run by one Lt Colonel Jim Carey who claimed he could secure government contracts & had a dealer network at his disposal,I have been told at least 6 vehicles were built what, happened after that I don’t know there are tales of some resting in the Lincolnshire area I’m sure some of the TNUK “cognoscente” will be able to tell us!
