Motorway numbers

Just a thought, is there any logic to the naming of motorways, or A roads for that matter? For example why is there no M 12,13 (superstition maybe?)14,15,16,17,18 or 19? Also is there any reason why motorways beginning with a 5 go across the country, M50,54,55,56,58. (With the exception of 53 and 57)

I think its the old numbering system before motorways .

London being the hub so all main routes extend from there

IE
M1 ,M2 , M3, M4.
Then came the additional routes fro other roads
If you look at the start of a route in the old days a spur that started from say the A4 would start with a 4 ie A4, A420, A46, A4174, etc.
oh and the M5 goes north not across the country

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Brit … ing_scheme

this may explain it better though

The M62 starts in Liverpool, so should be numbered as the M52 - The original plan was a motorway (M52) Liverpool to Manchester, city centre to city centre but instead we have ended up with this; (because of a cutback in funding perhaps)

M62 - M602 (this should have been the M52)

M62 - M60 - M62 (M60 is the ring road & M62 should have been Manchester - Leeds - Hull)

The M62 was indeed Manchester - Leeds - Hull but a bit got renumbered M60 when that new motorway round the bottom of Manchester got invented.
Also that bit of M60 near Trafford used to be the M63.

Posted before, but this is how we got the M25 :open_mouth:

For those out there who are still unfortune enough to have to deliver round London have a google for the London Fiveways scheme. It was an aborted plan to have five ring roads around the capital. Some sections got built which is why we used to have a A40(M) Westway and a A102(M) north of the Blackwall Tunnel.
The M1 was to have been extended from Staples Corner right into the city.

The motorways around london are supposed to go around in clockwise direction eg 1 north, 2 east etc, the A roads are numbered in a similar way but it does not always way

Good video. Worth a watch.

I think the idea of the motorway network was that it was named after the A road it run near, but obviously there will be many exceptions, I can think of the M5 than doesn’t really follow the A5.

Loads of info on these websites
