some of us (a lot ) older than 45 dont understand the reference either :unamused:

On the subject of, those who already have a full motorcycle licence need to check they still have that entitlement as DVLA have been removing it, after your licence has been sent back to them for what ever reason.

I could kick myself for not taking my motorcycle test back in the day when you could rock up on a Honda C70 and do a couple of trips around the block while the examiner hid behind a pillar box. :stuck_out_tongue:

That’s how I got mine. Only difference was a Honda 50 and examiner was behind trees, but his clipboard was still on show

Sat mine on a 250cc. Easy peasy. Couple of times round the block, a few questions and bingo. Had an awful lot of fun since and before tbh.

I was naughty and didn’t do my test till the early 1990’s. Had been lined up for it whilst in the Army, but fell foul of a miserable git of a magistrate when I got caught with no L-plates on the A34 near Newbury; third endorsement and before the days of points that got you a ban. Didn’t bother for years but our lovely village bobby saw me leave my mum’s place on the Harley one day and had a quiet word next time he saw me; get legal or get nicked!

Biggest problem I had was training on a 125 which was a lot smaller than the Harley Sportster I’d been riding before deciding to “go straight”.

And riding round Lincoln when training hoping none of my mates spotted me!

Did mine gratis courtesy of the military. I did my training on a BSA B40 (I think) but on the day of my test it crapped itself (it was British after all) so I did the actual test on my own RD250.

Yeah I believe the military used the B40 350 single. Bit of a slow plodder! Now the RD on the other hand was fun and smelt lovely from behind.

Hi Guys
Day of my Test, Worked at Makro in Irlam but lived near to Warrington so I put location of Test Manchester and Strangways , went to my bike ( Suzuki GT250) and it had a flat front tire, so i had to ask my mate could I borrow his bike a Honda 250 . Off I go to Strangways and as someone else said couple of laps doing a figure 8 then examiner stops me ask me to do the same block round but the other way ( keep crossing Bury New Rd ) and do a couple of laps ,then stops me again and tells me at some point he going to be watching me and will place his hand in the air and i have to do a emergency stop . All done calls me over back to test center couple of road sign and you’ve passed ,seems like only yesterday ,then went out a bought this below from Doug Hackings in Bolton

I had not owned a bike for years then decided a few years back that I will get one & relive my youth, brought a bike had it in the workshop to do a thorough service & check over, company
that I did some casual weekend driving work for, wanted a copy of my licence, the Guy who copied my licence was a biker & we started chatting about what I had just brought, as he handed
my licence back asked if I was going to do the course, I replied no I will just take it easy & get back into the swing of it, he said you need to do the course to obtain a licence first, I asked why
and he pointed out that I had no Bike section on my licence, The bike pictures on the licence are for mopeds which I had never looked at closely, I contacted DVLA who asked for my pass
certificate from around 40 years ago, I am sure I sent it to them yo update the licence & I was told that I would need to sit a test.

I have no idea when it was removed from my licence, the bike is still in storage maybe next year.

Passed mine in Cheetham Hill, no roundabouts on the test course unlike nearby Failsworth.

LIke the Piccadilly 261 stickers on the windshield those were the radio days !

Failed my module 1 first time for going over the line on the emergency stop. Passed 2nd try. Did my lessons with an owd Scotch fella from Blackrod, Bolton. Think he’s retired now. Plenty of training schools about in the NW. Good luck. Any bike in mind?

passed mine in the '70’s on a BSA A10 650cc combo :sunglasses: still got a combo amongst my small collection of old relics

Apologies mate. It was an American tv series aired over here in the mid eighties, pretty sure it was short lived

Very much in the genre of Airwolf, Knight Rider etc. 80’s was ace for tv series with vehicles…Fall Guy was another cracker. I vaguely remember a trucking series too, BJ & the Bear? {Not to be confused with a DVD I once watched with somewhat different content)

Chopper Squad, The A Team, CHiPs, The Dukes of Hazard, Magnum PI, not to mention Smokey & the Bandit, Convoy, Duel, Easy Rider etc. Think a couple of 70’s stuff might have snook in there

The tests in Bristol in the 70,s when I took mine must of been different to the rest of the country ( hid behind a tree ) as I failed my 1 st test , so mine must of been paying some kind of attention , on putting his arm out for a emergency stop I skidded past him , failed , passed though 2 nd test

Try bikesmart in Wigan, I passed with these a few months ago, you can spread the training out, I had previous experience on 125s so I didnt need a lot of training, it only cost me around £550 altogether, but they do 3-hour blocks for around £105 pay as you go, Get your theory done before you book your lessons then you are good to go straight for your test if you are competent enough, you also need to do a CBT.
