Well we have been told today VOSA have shut up shop and there will be a 5 months grace for MOT’s…So no MOT’s for 5 months ,Servicing still has to be done,by your provider and up to scratch to for a word qualify …It will cause chaos when they re-open as there will not be enough slots for the amount of vehicles needing done …I don’t know how this affects cars as they are done by garages
Bugger I just tested my Foden on the 28th !

So there was a danger of their inspectors catching coronavirus from lorries?
Who knew?
I dropped mine off Wednesday for S&I them mot on Monday so I’m not back to work until tuesday [emoji2]
They rang to say they don’t think mine will be tested now. They didn’t say anything about a grace period though.

DVSA suspends HGV testing - Compliance News - Commercial Motor
They need to tell all the ATFs this then, because the answer from one of my two local ones two hours ago is that NO they have not been told this, and a phone call two minutes ago to the other one gives the same answer which is: they are still waiting for official communication to this effect. The only official communication from the DVSA so far has been: “two days’ suspension and after that maybe, we don’t know yet”. I have a test on Tuesday which will require the vehicle to be loaded especially for test with the only product heavy enough for the brake test. This is slow moving stuff which sits in the back of the warehouse meaning a lot of other pallets have to be moved to get at it.
What was revealed is the enforcement will be out in large numbers looking for tacho offences.
If the MOT gets postponed, then the best time to re-establish a new test date - would be to coincide with the date one’s insurance is due, assuming that is later this year, beyond the 3-month period of likely shut-down…
How many have MOT and Insurance/Tax due on the same day each year? - Not many, I would have thought.
Who has the same car for more than five years for a start?
Who on Earth (except someone suffering from rampant OCD) would want their tax, MOT and insurance renewal to fall on the same day?

Yeah, right! I bet it happened just as you were lining all your pens, pencils and rulers in a straight line equidistant from the edge of your office desk!
I was told this yesterday but didn’t mention it as was waiting to see if anyone else had heard anything. We had one tested Tuesday, but any tests yesterday were cancelled, apparently it was the risk of the inspector catching Coranavirus when checking the inside of the cab, driver may have coughed.

If you buy a new car, or put one on the road from VOR status - you’d expect to MOT, tax and insure it for yourself the same day.
You don’t think that 2nd hand car showroom that has had a fancy car polished up there, unsold for months now - gets a regular tax & MOT done fresh monthly for it do you?
Years later, you might get rid of, and replace that car partway through the year.
Insurance then gets transferred, but the insurance renewal date stays the same MOT on newly acquired car - highly unliikely to be the same day as the previous one.
Thus, it is the “trade of vehicles” that causes the two dates to diverge.
Off an dvsa email this evening,
COVID-19 - heavy vehicle testing suspended
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve taken the decision to suspend heavy vehicle testing all Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV), trailers and Public Service Vehicles (PSV) for up to 3 months.
From today, all HGVs, trailers and PSVs with an annual test due to expire in a particular month will be issued with a 3-month certificate of exemption (CTE) until further notice.
Paper certificates will not be re-issued for HGVs, trailers and PSVs but we will amend the digital record so that vehicles can continue to operate.
We want to ensure that all heavy vehicles and trailers remain legal whilst the country deals with the COVID-19 outbreak. So DVSA will be implementing the provisions within the Plating and Testing Regulations and Motor Vehicle Test Regulations which provide for HGV and PSV vehicles to be exempted from the annual roadworthiness test.
What this means for your vehicles
We will automatically extend your test certificate for 3 months from the current expiry date.
We know that test certificates for PSVs expire on a specific date. We are looking at how we can prioritise vehicles that have an expired test certificate and we’ll provide further guidance as soon as possible.
You’ll still need to keep your HGVs, trailers and PSVs maintained in a roadworthy condition and operate within the terms of Operators’ licence conditions.
Thank you
We realise that this is a difficult time for you. These are exceptional circumstances and we thank you for your understanding and patience.
Next - extensions in the same vein for “Key Workers using Private Transport”…
Not much good keeping that truck with the stained frilly curtains and missing wheel nut caps on the road - only for Muggins not to be able to legally drive their car into work to drive said truck eh?
