I wash in a transport company a while ago and noticed a memo stating Tha to wash lorries they had to get the full waterproof overalls, wellies, rubber gloves and the best bit…a full face mask, goggles not good enough it stated. Soon washing a lorry will be deemed way to dangerous.

I’d welcome that at our place. Washing an 8 legger tipper at the end of the week, the amount of muck/grit that gets thrown up goes everywhere (mouth, eyes, etc).

Bertie goes clubbing in a shell suit and glow sticks.
Another I thought of is Yusen in Wellingbrough, where you can still see the outline of 15 under the new 14. I wonder how much safer it is statistically now its reduced by 1mph. I reckon at least 1,000%. After all, I’ve been there many times and I’m not dead (much as some would like that), so safety obviously works. HURRAH FOR SAFETY
A friend of mine was fired just before Christmas for wearing a Woolley hat underneath his hard hat.

Yep,been told the same thing myself. Apparently it was because it was a railhead it has to be orange. Personally if you cant see a train I fail to see how an orange vest helps when a yellow doesn’t[/b]
It’s because from a distance a yellow hi-viz could be confused for a green light by a train driver where as a orange one would most resemble a red. The theory being if it’s going to be confused by a driver then the safer option is to stop.

Not being allowed on the deck of your wagon to sort out load, straps, Dunnage etc. Lafarge & Palletline Hubs come to mind.Palletline will allow you to provided you are watched and have permission. I usually ask for the full harness, parachute and soft landing to be placed around the trailer. For the top deck add RAF search and rescue crew and emergency flares.
![]()
The problem is that the people making the rules have no idea how to do the job or what it really entails.
We have a rule that the load must be strapped before leaving the hub. In bad weather we are not allowed to open curtains until under cover at QC. When picking up a stand trailer we have to open it up and strap it (often with only a couple of feet between trailers) in pouring rain. No provision made for protecting the load, never mind drivers.![]()

I used to work for palletways and they introduced hard hats for working around the double deckers,i asked what the point of them is and was told if I open the side a pallet could fall off the top deck,i laughed and said if a bloody pallet fell off the top deck you are either seriously injured or dead,a hard hat is no good

Pray tell, what was their response?!Well if I remember rightly, it started out being my fault as I should have looked where I was going. I did point out that I was only following the site rules and removed my glasses as instructed.
As an “accident” had occurred, a manager was called and the brain donor behind the desk had to explain to him what and how it happened. The hardest thing I have done in my life was trying to keep a straight face as the whole sorry saga was relayed.
I went to Cemex 3 more times and I would always ask if the site rules had been changed for spectacle wearers. “No, you have to remove them and wear these useless “safety” glasses instead.” So I tripped up a further 3 times. I mean, what are the odds of that happening??
I went to Cemex, Rugby, once, to swap a Roll on Bin over, about 5 years ago, did the induction, signed all the B/S forms (or whatever) & have never been back since.
What a waste of time & energy. !
A few years ago, I think it was the winter of 2010/11 I did a while back in the UK and had the misfortune to be sent in to West Burton power station in a tipper to load. Now I’d been there before in my pre-Canada days as I did several loads from Switzerland to ABB who were fitting something there and there was the usual heavy handed H&S nonsense but nothing you wouldn’t see at any other such place. However a few years later and with said tipper, I had to park up for over an hour while I did an induction course, an alcohol breathalyser test and a mouth swab test that they had a special machine for to test for 4 or 5 different types of drugs. Thank heavens I thought to switch the hideous mk1 digital tacho on to rest before going in (I know, how rebellious of me, vosa, fines, prison etc) The best of it was, after all that nonsense I only had to drive just beyond the gate, get about 5 or 6 buckets full of whatever it was I was loading and leave, that part, the actual revenue earning and economically important bit took about 4 minutes.

Yep go into West Burton Power Station and you do the induction yearly, drugs & Alcohol test!!!
Sometimes one of the Security muppits will stand outside and you’ll have to pull a ball outta bag, black ball & you do the Drugs/Alcohol test again
I have a hard hat in the cab which I paid £4 for (company paid me back though!!!) for the rare times that I load bricks from near Kidderminster or Walsall, not that a hard hat will actually deflect a ton of bricks off the forklift!!!
Come to think of it nor will a HV or steel toe caps…

Did or do you by any chance have the misfortune of taking loads out of West Burton to British Gypsum in East Leake? Memories of that jumped up canute at the gatehouse/weighbridge will be with me for years. What first class, grade A oxygen thief. I only did that job for a few weeks as a bit of a filler but I’ve since spoken to several British drivers in Canada who know of the prick, he’s famous all over the world by the sounds of it.
