Montgomerys looking for drivers out of Holyhead port. Anyone know what they are like to work for?
Anyone have any info on them, i’m thinking of applying but would rather have some idea of what i’m getting into first
At Preston depot: Low pay leading to employing perhaps not the cream of drivers. Some spectacular damage done from time to time. Some drivers stay long term whilst there’s also a fair turn over.
Are you aware of the size of the Ballyvesey Holdings Group?

No,whats that?
The parent company which encompasses them.
I can honestly say, I’ve never come across a company that employs so many brain dead knuckle draggers. They used to park up at fleetwood docks, It was as if they would purposly park in a way that would cause as much mayhem as possible, They would park up at birkenhead, get ■■■■■■ all night, shout abuse to anyone that wasn’t too well built. The best i saw was like a scene from the scousers, Three of them were arguing over a prostitute.
Here you go…

Own Montracon Trailers, Birds Transport and West Pennine Scania along with many other things.
My mates (who had never worked there) told me that the pay at Montgomeries was crap twenty years ago…
I’m glad I didn’t listen because it was my first start at a ‘big’ haulage company and at the time, I actually felt like I was earning some money in transport for once. We saved enough for a deposit on our first house while I worked there.
I actually met a bloke recently who started the same week as me, he’s still there and I left in '94.
I doubt I would ever go back though, I like to work for firms who like the drivers to think for themselves (which has never really been the Monties way) Satellite depots tend to be a couple of parking slots on the dockside and a text message each evening, not everyones cup of tea.
Montgomeries is an ideal firm for a newish driver to go and find their feet or an established driver who wants to do something a little easier but as a long term career choice, I would hope folks aspirations were a little higher.
Saying that though, they never did me any harm…
Good luck,
W
I got offered a job at the Preston Depot at the back end of last year. Mon-Fri Days, £370 Gross for 55 hours per week and £8 p/h after 55.
I decided against taking the job.

You come on here saying you have turned down a job paying £6.72 per hour, have you no shame there will be drivers saying you should be glad of the chance to work for them

In my day, the day shift was king. The wages were a direct comparison to Mike’s quote above. What Mike failed to realise is the day shift would hardly ever do 55 hours, in fact they would struggle to do 9 hours a day.
The planning always want the trucks back for the night shift which in Monties eyes was an absolute priority.
I had a mate who was a proper Shap veteran who had been a real tramper, he was on days and actually took up jogging because he had so much spare time. He saw the job for what it was and stayed on until he retired.
Like I said before, it’s not perfect but Montgomeries never did me any harm.

After a bit if agency work part time I got my first full time job as an out based tramper for Montgomery back in the mid 90s.
I was on the European side but having run up from the south coast I rarely got below toddington yard before a Friday afternoon.
Money wasn’t the best, or worse to be honest but it was easy work and you were never pushed. The kit was always well maintained and backed up although at the time the tramper units had all done there time on the day/night shift.
Don’t know if things have changed but they were willing to take me on with little experience. Plenty of long term lads on there too and I still bump into a couple who are still there nearly 20 years later.
Not a job to earn mega bucks at but a steady number.
Cheers
Neilf
I did 3 years for them working out of the old Dukes yard at Crick . Loved the job , we were treated like adults and left to get the work done . The ONLY reason I left was because I was offered a better wage 5 mins from my house . Monty’s is easy work , newish kit . I would go back if the wages were better .

Did you work for Pete, Shade? I was there in 2006/7. He was a tool!
I use to run up and down to Liverpool, Fleetwood or heysham with the toddington lads on the night trunks in the 90s I subbed for pandoro out of Leighton buzzard. Use to have some great fun with the cb chit chat and sat morning breakfast in bp crick
And this is when you could do l/buzzard to seaforth then bob tail upto heysham pick a trailer up and back to l/buzzard in 9 hours drive the reg of my truck was A521LFR volvo F12 ex pandora no limiter
I did Vern ! I got on alright with him , but a lot of people say the same as you . What I liked about him was if you ever had a row with him , it was quickly forgotten . He got stressed out over the pressure he got from the Preston office , I worked in the Crick office for a while and got to see it first hand . It wasn’t unheard of for us to have to run bobtail to Toddington just to get an empty trailer , because Preston flat refused to let us use their ones .
He tried to get me to collect from Banbury, from Crick after doing a 10 hr drive. He was told and the keys lobbed up the stairs at him.
Was that South African twonk there with you…The one with the gold and all the bull ■■■■■■?
No mate , sounds like I’d remember him !!
Pete only tried to push me once , I was running out of hours on a bay at Walkers Crisps , so he told me to run the trailer back to Crick , I went off duty at 15hrs and he took the trailer back to Leicester and got it loaded ! Top managering
Creep! LOL
