What is the script with going through the blanc with plant machinery ? A friend is going through there on thursday with a tele-handler. Gvw is 40 tonne and the trailer is a step frame flat bed. Machine does not overhang the trailer and is chained down and obviously has its own diesel tank with approx 100ltrs of red diesel . Thanks in advance. Not too sure of how to advise him.
How is the machine on the trailer. No problem for the red fuel in the machine.
Max height for Mount Blanc is 4.70 metres.
Width limit is 2.55 metres.
Frejus tunnel height limit is 4 metres and the width limit is 2.55 metres.
ADR goods vehicles use Frejus only.
Any dimensions larger than above require a permit.
Allow three weeks to get the permit.
used to be ok m8 but not sure about 100lts of fuel any em rogers boys tell ya and u wouldnt get past control point b4 u go up ring em rogers 01604 755511 they pretty decent they tell ya in a second gd luck
Hi Kerbdog , just tried to ring the ATMB info desk , but it’s shut till tomorrow . I’m going to e.mail the help desk with the details that you have given right now and hopefully will get the reply that you need ASAP.
The Mount Blanc website says vehicles fitted with chains are not allowed.
Not sure about construction and use regs here but do they mean chains fitted to a vehicle during manufacture or chains attached to a vehicle or trailer to secure the load.?
I have never seen machinery and plant going through both tunnels.
At a guess, they will park the truck at the control point and measure all the dimensions.
Then a van will ■■■■■■ you in the tunnel with its flashing beacons.
This costs more money.
On the return journey from Italy back to France,do not pass the checkpoint, where a ticket is given about 20 miles before getting to the tunnel.
If you have no ticket, they send you back to get it.
It is to do with the emissions for the truck.
The only limits for the amount of fuel, only applies to the propeled vehicle
Diesel Dave is the man to ask about it.If the machine comes under Adr regs for the tunnel or not.
Mont Blanc does not accept Adr loads ect.
At Frejus, about 15 miles before the tunnel, the truck must stop at the Pompiers check point.
Sometimes they check if the driver has the correct Ppe.
Tyres and the load is checked.
This a fire brigade check point. When the load is Adr,they check on a computer what is safe.If the load is mixed for risk of a fire or explosion.
If the two tunnels are a no go,can he transit Switzerland to get to Italy?
The fuel in the plant machine being carried does not come under ADR, but the Mont Blanc Tunnel has its own local rules, so I’d advise that the tunnel authorities are consulted.

rotflmao, no its meant to keep motorcycle gangs away so you can’t drive a chain-driven motorcycle through it
seriously now, ever heard of snowchains?
Spot on DD.I would advise the tunnel staff of the fuel on the machine. There is a large restaurant up the stairs in the main terminal building.Fresh pasta and pizza.
The fire engines that service the tunnel have a drivers cab at the front and back.Very strange looking,so they can go in both directions.
The scenery up there is quite stunning. There is radar inside the tunnel. The speed limit is strictly enforced.
Hopefully the load is under the height limits.
Yes. We checked the website and the chains thing confused us…surely that must mean snow chains.
Hi Kerbdog, just had a reply to my e.mail, from the Mont Blanc people. They will not allow it to go through, he has to go Frejus. HTH
Frujus it is then.Where abouts in Italy is the destination.?
The Italians love coffee, look out for the Lavaza sign on the motorway stops and national free roads.
The signs in rural areas do not make sense.
It is easy to get lost. The roads get very narrow in small villages.
Watch out for over hanging low balconys on shops and houses…Finding a hot meal in the evening is quite remote.
Only fast food shops open til late.
The motorway food is very good.
It is cheaper to buy a return ticket for Frejus rather than two single tickets.
Before Frejus there is a holding area where they check if the lorry is safe to pass though the tunnel.
This is mainly for bulges sticking out of curtainside trailer.
Have a good trip.Take the camera.
The snow is still there at this time of year.
Any advice for Italy, ring Secure Cargo at Yate near Bristol.
Toby, you are a star!!
Bike ride through the tunnel then dinner with the Mayor’s daughter Mr Bullit.
How did your mate get on Kerbdog ?
