Hi, I have been looking at upgrading me iPad to a 3G one so that I can use it on the road a bit more. However I have now found that a certain phone provider has a mobile wifi device that turns a 3G signal into wifi, apparently it can be used anywhere. Does anyone have one and if so do they work?
The device you’re thinking of is often known by the name one manufacturer of the hardware uses - MiFi. It’s a small battery powered router with wireless broadband on the WAN side and Wi-Fi on the LAN side - you use it in conjunction with a mobile broadband contract.
They’re available on Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and Three, but not O2 (who seem to have given up trying to compete with the other network’s mobile broadband deals).
As always, think seriously about how much you are going to use - mobile broadband can rapidly get expensive to use, especially if you make heavy use of things like Skype, Spotify and YouTube.
Mr B:
An iPhone can do the same thing it’s called tethering or personal hotspot.
Indeed, a lot of smartphones offer this service, though it can require an extra monthly payment to unlock the feature and you need to check your contract. Some phone contracts forbid tethering, others allow unlimited tethering but have a separate usage limit or usage charges for data used when tethering.
I use my iPhone on the 3 network to connect to the Internet
And it is fantastic I listen to my local radio no matter where in
the country I am, I also use Netflix and lovefilm with no probs.
I’m connected from morning to nite and it doesn’t cost me any
Extra, only the usual monthly fee of £35…

I use my HTC as a modem all day long with a 3 PAYG sim. £15 a month gets you 300mins, unlimited txt and unlimited internet. And unlike most providers, unlimited means UNLIMITED.
