Tachograph records cannot be used to prosecute for speeding offences as they don’t record the location of the vehicle and the time may not be accurate.
For the same reason you can’t use it as a defence as you can’t prove that the time recorded on the tacho record matches the clock on the camera.

Nail hit on head. It might be possible to show that the speed at the stated location was under the limit - But this would require detailed forensic examination of the speed and distance, along the same lines as would be done by the police during a fatal collision investigation. In essence, the investigator matches speed and distance to known road features, junctions etc over several miles. This would Not Be Cheap.
The evidence from a camera van will comprise of a photograph showing the vehicle with the laser’s crosshairs centred on it and the speed being recorded at that time. There will also be a video recording of the whole session, showing how the operator sighted the vehicle and tracked it for several seconds (with its speed shown throughout, so you can see if it is accelerating, slowing or maintaining a constant speed). This video will also show if there were any other vehicles in the immediate vicinity.
