Checkout assistant above her station me thinks.
With her atitude she will be working security in a RDC soon.

If anyone wants to know what it feels like to be ignored, then try standing in front of a goods in window on a Friday afternoon.

I agree, so what if she was on the phone. It’s till woman’s job to scan, take money and give change. If the customer wants to be on the phone who cares, it doesn’t effect her doing her Job in the slightest.

This is exactly what wrong with people nowadays.
It common courtesy and manners. One of my biggest hates when in a shop is the till or serving staff having a conversation between themselves while serving me like I don’t exist (I’ve even had a halfords cashier answer the stores phone halfway through my transaction to talk to someone about bike parts) the other reason being making mistakes by scanning items twice or giving incorrect change (I gave them £20 and got change for £10 as they weren’t paying attention)
I’ve made the effort to come to your store so show some respect to customers.
The staff on the other hand deserve exactly the same respect from me. I think the cashier was 100% right and sainsburys should back them. If the woman wants to go to elsewhere and be rude, let her.

My opinion too.

Got to agree … checkout staff deserve some respect. I think it was poor of Sainsbury not to back their worker.

My thoughts too. Nowt to do with the checkout operator, they should mind their own business and do the job they’re paid to do instead of sticking their beaks into things that don’t concern them.

Bit like you posting on the owner operators thread.

Fair play to her, sainsburys should have backed her up. It makes no difference to her ability to scan items the lady being on the phone granted but does it hurt to put your phone down for 2 minutes say hello and be polite. When I see people doing it I make a point off commenting when it’s my turn to go to the till so they can here it. Manners cost nothing I always great with a hello and always say have a nice day when I leave anywhere it costs nothing to show a bit off respect or decency to people.

I’ve been stuck behind people talking on the phone whilst putting stuff onto the conveyor at Tesco, I’ve also been left waiting at the self-scan checkout while an ignorant piece of [zb] talked on the phone instead of scanning his goods.

I wasn’t happy either time :smiling_imp:

Sainsburys should have backed the assistant and told the rude customer to [zb] off to Asda or somewhere.

There is plenty on here complaining about not being shown respect, the girls got balls.

Just comes down to manners and relating to the person who is serving you.

I’m 100% with you on that one, and I think Sainsbury’s are totally wrong apologising and giving the customer vouchers or whatever they did.

This was on Jeremy Whine on Radio2 and I was gobsmacked at how many comments were along the lines of “I’m paying their wages so I can do whatever I like”. Just because you are the customer and are buying something that doesn’t mean all your manners are allowed to disappear.

I do think it’s rude to be on the phone when you’re involved in a transaction/face to face situation. There was some other company who introduced some kind of rule whereby customers on the phone were refused service.

It’s nothing to do with manners. If you had some reason to speak to them about the product or whatever then I could understand your point, but there is no reason to speak to them or have a conversation with them, you put your items down, they scan, you put in card and pin, collect receipt, done. Good on Sainsbury’s for getting shut of her. Maybe she’ll learn to do the job she’s paid to do and keep her gob shut in future.

How can carrying out a transaction with another person have nothing to do with manners?

Rob K:
It’s nothing to do with manners.

It is everything to do with manners.

If someone is providing you with a service, which a checkout operator is, then it is incredibly rude to not at the very least say “hello” at the start and “thank you” at the end when the transaction is competed.

Which is what I would do even if I was on the phone. The point is that there is no need for any communication at all apart from initial pleasantries and the fact that you are holding a more important telephone conversation at the time is of no business to the checkout operator. Sainsbury’s did her a favour by firing her and she is clearly unfit for a frontline customer service role if such a minor event causes her to flip out like she did.

It is lack of manners & showing any kind of respect , its just rude , how many on here moan about being treated like scum because were drivers , if you pulled in somewhere to do a job & were totally ignored because person you were dealing with was on the phone you would soon moan , its just common courtesy to be polite … to everybody …
