Just been looking at mobile broadband deals and 3 are quoting me a 1gb monthly allowance and free laptop for £17-50 a month on a 24 month contract and i have a couple of questions :
a. Does this seem like a decent deal ■■
b. Is this too good a deal for there not to be a catch
i have 1 gig a month with virgin for £5 per month so the rest of your payment is for your “free” laptop which is £12.50 x 24 = £300 for that "free " laptop.
your choice as to wether its worth £300
it is a good deal but as gezt has pointed out you are paying £300 for (what i am guessing) wont be a very good laptop, it will do its job but that’s about it.
if you have a look at some other places ( laptopsdirect.co.uk) i bought one of mine from here and they were very helpful and i had it for about 3 years until i lent it to a mate who was going to Iraq so he could stay in touch with his kids while out there and the sand got into it!
have a shop around but to be honest most of these deals are a bit of a con if you want the truth, but then again it is a good way of getting a laptop in HP if you have a poor credit rating
I got a “free” lappy for signing up to orange broadband a couple years ago, it was a perfectly good, the broadband made my hoover jealous with it’s suckage ability
To be honest, so long as you go for a decent brand (HP/Compaq, Acer, Asus, Toshiba, Dell) not a junk one (Packard Bell, Ei, Advent), and you get a decent spec (Dual core chip, 15"+ screen, min 2GB ram, min 150GB hard disk, and at least 3 USB 2 ports) you should be ok for regular use, like email, web browsing, online tv. Buy a decent bag to keep it all in, and just remember, laptops under 500 quid are NOT games machines.
1GB isn’t a lot these days, it’ll get swallowed very quickly by the iplayer. It’s fine, however, for the odd night out browsing the forums, with the very occasional youtube vid. If you spend the weekend annoying the blue coats at PCworld, you may well be able to sneak a better deal out of them. The Orange deal I got 2 years back also allowed you to have a big discount (equal to the sale price of the “free” one) on almost any laptop.
Has anybody any info on the 3 network. Carphone Warehouse are offering a laptop also for £30 per month. I have heard that the 3 network isn’t very good. Can somebody else advise me please.
