Thanks for those chassis nos.Paul ! Any chance you could locate the C/nos of MEC 98K,NEC 260K and OJM 480L ? IIRC they started FC 20 ?,these were the first 3 new Atkys I bought at Bewick Transport, there were a number of others both new and secondhand but these three were first! Thanks again,Dennis.

Actually - found it in a post by Marky on another thread:marky:
I’ve managed to find the pictures I was on about earlier, and here’s the wagon in question - with the 400s following it down the line. The chassis number 29941 can be seen chalked on the bumper.Hi Folks,
Dennis probably had that first Seddon Atkinson tractor unit he bought from
K.Fell reg no NHG 920P.
Cheers Malc. There were some N-plate examples out there, though
Thats a nice shot of the K.Fell Sed/Atk when it was new, this was the last new motor that joined the Fell fleet in Dec '75 it was sold to them by Hardman Bros. of Bamber Bridge, six months later we bought Fells out in June '76.The only thing that spoils that shot is the atrocious state of the sheets and the “rough” sheeting and roping job which was never one of Fells strong points,we sorted through their sheets PDQ when we took over and slung a lot into the skip they were so bad and our shunters soon improved the tidiness of the Libby loads leaving Milnthorpe depot ! I sold that Sed/Atk in Jan '77 replacing it with a new F88.That Sed/Atk was the one and only time we ran a 250 ■■■■■■■ or any ■■■■■■■ above a 220! Cheers Bewick.

This Atkinson used to transport Atkins’ restored and preserved1934 Foden S-Type DG6,NG 6631,FINDONIAN. Painted in a light brown, with red, dark brown and white relief, livery this Foden pulled a matching a 4-wheeler Drawbar Trailer:-

Both this Foden lorry and its trailer have high-sided bodies complete with conveyer belt-type floors!
In 2006 it was sold at an auction for £41,475!In one of the latest historic commercial vehicle magazines,Atkins advertise their circa 1932-34 Foden 4-wheeler lorry, complete with it’s Dorman diesel engine!
What I would like to know, please,is what became of the Atkinson transporter? Do Atkins still own it?,or is it now preserved by somebody else?

Many thanks anyway Paul,I do recall that both MEC 98K and NEC 260K were sold on to Leyland Paints after they left our ownership, they were used for transfering their product from Factory to warehouse.I can’t just recall what happened to OJM 480L,although it did remain in the fleet for many more years finally ending up on a short distance, very lucrative job, transfering woodpulp between store and the Mill we hauled for at Milnthorpe! but they were three great tractors and gave us reliable, trouble free service.Cheers Dennis.

This was the improved image we gave Fells, which included J.B.Hudson Ltd., after years of decline prior to our buy out !

Life seems just a little unfair at times Dennis . It seems that your Borderers are not candidates after all , the last one would seem to be the one now in the livery of M A Evans , & just a little salt for the wound , they are also said to have had a Guy Big J 8LXB Tractor UnitWey! Hey! away we go again “CO”,this M.A.Evans outfit seem to be in at the “death/kill” of any motor that has a dubious provenance !! How many motors did this firm operate by the way and did they purchase the Atky “new”?,did they operate nationally or just around their local area ? Oh! and what was the chassis No. of this very last Borderer tractor they ran ? The 8 wheeler has it’s chassis no. quite clearly chalked on the bumper so I would expect the M.A. Evans chassis No. to be consecutive,or at least very close! My claim still stands until disproved by cast iron proof,so over to you, shall I hold my breath ? No don’t answer that “CO” !! Cheers Dennis.
Chassis No: FC.29939
Date first registered in the UK 01/08/1975
Missing one important point there though, Dennis: the chassis number was allocated at the time of order, and not on the shop floor.
An 8LXB-engined motor might well have been ordered some time ahead and have a lower number, whilst motors with the 220 ■■■■■■■ were being built for stock. The photos of the Mk.2 ‘funeral’ do clearly show an 8LXB Borderer, although its identity isn’t shown.

Hiya Paul, these were the first two Sed/Atks we took delivery of,the first one was an August (IIRC?) 1975 the second was an August 1976 delivery. Both were the same spec, Day cab 8LXB/Fuller 9509/Group axle Ugh! and we ran them both on double shift operation, the main let down being the Seddon group axle which was an absolute nightmare!!The supplying Dealer was Rylands.Cheers Dennis.

You are probably “spot on” there Chris as Atky’s wouldn’t build 8LXB’s for stock, only for firm orders which could have been placed months earlier prior to the launch of the Sed/Atk.The two P reg Atky’s I bought in late '75 were definitely ex stock and their FC chassis numbers were a long way apart as well! Cheers Dennis.
